Padres top Diamondbacks 4‑1 behind Cronenworth homer

SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — Germán Márquez rebounded from a rough outing five days earlier to pitch five innings of three-hit, shutout ball and Jake Cronenworth delivered a three-run homer in the first inning that carried the San Diego Padres to a 4-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night at PETCO Park.

Márquez, who had lasted only three innings and allowed two earned runs in a loss at Los Angeles on July 2, scattered three singles, struck out four and walked none. He threw 15 strikes among his 46 pitches and left with a four-run lead after yielding only a double to Ketel Marte in the first and singles to James McCann in the second and Gabriel Moreno in the fourth. The right-hander improved to 4-2 on the season.

The Padres needed only one inning to erase the Diamondbacks’ early 1-0 lead and seize control. Arizona had struck first in the top of the first when Marte doubled to right field, advanced to third on a fielding error by first baseman Cronenworth, and then scored on a bases-loaded walk to Max Kepler. But the Diamondbacks left the bases loaded when Nolan Arenado lined into an unassisted double play.

San Diego answered immediately in the bottom half. Fernando Tatis Jr. led off with a double to right and scored on a single by Jackson Merrill. After two strikeouts, Gavin Sheets walked and Cronenworth launched a fly ball to right that cleared the fence for his third home run of the season, putting the Padres ahead 4-1.

That was all the offense San Diego needed. Márquez retired 10 of the final 11 batters he faced, with the only blemish a two-out single by Moreno in the fourth. The Padres’ bullpen then took over, with Jhony Brito working 1 2/3 hitless innings, Bradgley Rodriguez striking out two in a perfect eighth, and Mason Miller closing the door with a 1-2-3 ninth that included two strikeouts. Miller earned his 23rd save.

For the Diamondbacks, starter Zac Gallen took the loss, falling to 3-9. Gallen lasted six innings, allowing six hits and four earned runs while striking out five. He threw 15 strikes and 46 balls, with 15 balls in play. The Diamondbacks managed only five hits total and grounded into two double plays. After the first inning, Arizona put only two runners in scoring position, both in the sixth when Gabriel Moreno singled and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. followed with a single, but Arenado grounded into a double play to end the threat.

Arizona’s bullpen trio of Kevin Ginkel, Jonathan Loáisiga and a spotless inning each kept the Padres off the board after the first, but the damage was already done. The Padres also grounded into two double plays, but their big first inning proved decisive.

The game, which drew 40,223 fans, lasted 2 hours, 27 minutes. The win moved the Padres to 45-46, tied with the Diamondbacks at the same mark. Arizona had won the series opener 8-0 on Monday, but could not replicate that success.

Key performances came from multiple Padres relievers. Brito threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings with one strikeout, Rodriguez tossed a perfect eighth, and Miller dominated the ninth. For the Diamondbacks, Gallen’s six innings of work included five strikeouts, but the four first-inning runs were too much to overcome.

The game’s pivotal moment occurred in the bottom of the first when, after Arizona had taken a 1-0 lead and left the bases full, Cronenworth turned a 3-2 game into a 4-1 Padres advantage with one swing. That proved the difference as neither team scored thereafter.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Arizona 4, San Diego 2. Interstat’s ELO system gave San Diego a 55.70 percent probability to win. The Padres were installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total of five runs went under the over-under line of 8.5.
