SEATTLE MARINERS (47-44) AT MIAMI MARLINS (49-42)

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (Interstat) — The Seattle Mariners open a three-game series against the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night at loanDepot Park, with two of the National League’s top young pitchers squaring off in a matchup of teams hovering near the wild-card race.

Right-hander Emerson Hancock (1-3, 4.58 ERA) is scheduled to start for Seattle after throwing seven shutout innings against Toronto on Sunday. The 26-year-old allowed two hits and struck out five in the Mariners’ 4-0 victory, his first win of the season. Hancock struggled in his previous three outings, allowing six earned runs at Washington on June 14 and five earned runs against Boston on June 20.

Miami counters with right-hander Eury Pérez (9-4, 2.89 ERA), who has been dominant in three consecutive wins. On Sunday at Oakland, Pérez pitched seven hitless innings with eight strikeouts in a 9-8 Marlins victory. He has allowed one earned run over his last 17 innings, with 17 strikeouts.

The Marlins took two of three from the Athletics over the weekend, winning 9-8 and 12-5 after dropping Friday’s series opener. Miami catcher Heriberto Hernández went 3-for-4 with two home runs and two RBIs in Sunday’s win, while shortstop Otto Lopez added three hits and three RBIs.

Seattle took two of three from Toronto at home, winning 11-0 on Saturday before Sunday’s shutout. The Mariners dropped the series opener 2-0.

Tuesday’s forecast calls for 77 degrees with rain at game time, which could affect playing conditions at the retractable-roof ballpark.
