Kansas City Royals at New York Mets

NEW YORK (Interstat) — Rain is in the forecast for Tuesday night at Citi Field, where the Kansas City Royals and New York Mets, two teams separated by a single game in the standings, open a three-game series.

The Mets (37-53) hold a slim one-game edge over the Royals (37-54). First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. with a temperature of 66 degrees and rain likely.

Kansas City arrives after a dominant 15-1 victory Monday over the Philadelphia Phillies. Shortstop Tyler Tolbert led the charge, going 5-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs. He has been a bright spot for the Royals, with hits in eight of his last nine games, including a 5-for-5 performance Monday and a 2-for-2 game July 4.

The Royals have won two of their last three games, but have lost five of seven. Their lineup has been inconsistent, scoring five or more runs only once in the previous six games before Monday’s outburst.

The Mets are coming off a 10-9 win Sunday at Atlanta. Right-hander Nolan McLean (6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 5 K) was the winning pitcher. He has been dominant in June and July, allowing two earned runs or fewer in each of his last four starts, including two scoreless outings. He will be a key player to watch, potentially starting or coming out of the bullpen.

New York has won two of its last three games but has lost seven of 10 overall. The Mets’ lineup has been inconsistent, scoring three or fewer runs in five of their last seven.

Tuesday’s game is the first of a six-game homestand for the Mets, who will also host the Boston Red Sox over the weekend. Kansas City will continue its road trip Wednesday and Thursday at Citi Field before traveling to Baltimore.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 3-2 Mets victory.
