Rockies rally falls short as Dodgers win 8‑7 in 11 innings
LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — Shohei Ohtani homered and drove in four runs, and Dalton Rushing lined a game-ending single to center field in the 11th inning as the Los Angeles Dodgers outlasted the Colorado Rockies 8-7 on Monday night at Dodger Stadium.
The Dodgers improved to 60-32, while the Rockies dropped to 37-55 before a crowd of 48,245. The game lasted 3 hours, 21 minutes.
Ohtani put Los Angeles ahead for the first time with a two-run homer in the third inning, his 19th of the season. Rushing led off the inning with a double off Rockies starter Jose Castillo, and Ohtani crushed a 1-1 fastball to left-center field. The Dodgers then broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning against Castillo and reliever Riley Pint. Kyle Tucker and Teoscar Hernandez singled, and Max Muncy’s liner to right scored Tucker. Miguel Rojas followed with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Hernandez. Rushing doubled again, putting Muncy at third, and Ohtani punched a two-run single to center field, giving Los Angeles a 6-1 lead.
Colorado chipped away. Ezequiel Tovar led off the fifth with a solo homer to left field, his eighth, off Dodgers starter Eric Lauer. The Rockies added a run in the sixth when Cole Carrigg doubled, advanced to third on a flyout, and scored on Jake McCarthy’s single to center. Carrigg finished 3 for 5 with two RBIs.
Lauer allowed three earned runs on six hits over six innings, striking out three. He left with a 6-3 lead.
The game turned dramatically in the ninth. Dodgers reliever Brock Stewart worked a perfect eighth, but Tanner Scott could not close it out. With one out, Tovar walked, and pinch hitter Willi Castro singled. Kyle Karros doubled to the left-center gap, scoring Tovar and sending Castro to third. Scott then intentionally walked Hunter Goodman to load the bases. TJ Rumfield struck out for the second out, but Carrigg followed with another double to center field, clearing the bases and tying the game at 6. The Dodgers challenged a tag play at the plate, and the Rockies challenged a home-plate collision, but both calls were upheld.
The Rockies took the lead in the 10th. Carrigg started the inning on second under the international tiebreaker rules. Tyler Freeman sacrificed him to third, and McCarthy grounded out to first base, scoring Carrigg to make it 7-6.
But the Dodgers answered in the bottom of the 10th. Andy Pages opened the inning on second. Freddie Freeman grounded out, moving Pages to third. Mookie Betts then reached on a fielding error by second baseman Edouard Julien, allowing Pages to score the tying run. Kyle Tucker singled, but Teoscar Hernandez lined into a double play to end the inning.
In the 11th, the Rockies went quietly against Edgardo Henriquez. Willi Castro walked but was erased on a double-play groundout. Hernandez started the bottom of the 11th on second. After an intentional walk to Max Muncy, Tommy Edman sacrificed both runners into scoring position. Rushing then lined a single to center field, scoring Hernandez and ending the game.
Henriquez (3-0) earned the win with two scoreless innings, allowing no hits and striking out two. Jimmy Herget (0-3) took the loss after allowing the winning run in the 11th.
Ohtani went 3 for 4 with a homer and four RBIs, his third multi-hit game in his past four contests. Rushing finished 3 for 5 with an RBI. Tucker had two hits. For Colorado, Carrigg had three hits and two RBIs, while Tovar homered and drove in two.
The Rockies’ bullpen kept them in the game after Castillo and Pint struggled. Zach Agnos tossed three scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit and striking out one. Antonio Senzatela worked a scoreless ninth, striking out two. Brock Stewart struck out two in a perfect eighth for the Dodgers, and Alex Vesia pitched a clean seventh.
