Mets outlast Braves 7‑6 in 10 innings, take series

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. (Interstat) — Luis Torrens delivered a two-run double in the 10th inning to lift the New York Mets to a 7-6 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Monday at Truist Park.

The Mets, who entered the game with a 38-53 record, rallied from a two-run deficit in the ninth inning and then held off a Braves comeback in the bottom of the 10th. Atlanta, now 52-37, lost its second straight game to New York after taking the first two games of the four-game series.

Carson Benge gave the Mets an early lead with a solo home run to left-center in the second inning, his 11th of the season. The Braves answered quickly, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second. Jim Jarvis singled in Dominic Smith, and Michael Harris II followed with an RBI single that scored Mike Yastrzemski.

Atlanta extended its lead in the third inning when Matt Olson crushed a solo homer to right, his 23rd, making it 3-1. The Mets cut the lead to 3-2 in the sixth when Francisco Alvarez singled home Benge, who had doubled earlier in the inning.

New York left the bases loaded in the seventh and stranded a runner in the eighth. But in the ninth, the Mets exploded. After Francisco Alvarez singled and Brett Baty struck out, Ronny Mauricio singled. A.J. Ewing flied out, moving pinch-runner Tyrone Taylor to third. Then Juan Soto launched a three-run homer to right, his 19th, scoring Taylor and Mauricio to give New York a 5-3 lead.

Drake Baldwin singled, but reliever Devin Williams, who had entered earlier, allowed the two runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning. Cionel Pérez then got the final out of the ninth, stranding a runner.

The game went to extra innings. In the top of the 10th, Bo Bichette started on second base under the extra-innings rule. Francisco Lindor lined out, Benge grounded out, moving Bichette to third, and Jared Young was hit by a pitch. Torrens then lined a double to left, scoring Bichette and Young for a 7-5 lead.

The Braves cut the lead to 7-6 in the bottom of the 10th. Jim Jarvis grounded out, but Michael Harris II doubled to drive in pinch-runner José Azócar. After Ozzie Albies struck out, the Mets intentionally walked Olson. Jorge Mateo walked to load the bases, but Mauricio Dubón grounded into a forceout to end the game.

Luke Weaver earned his first save of the season, pitching the final inning, allowing one run on one hit with one strikeout. Brooks Raley, who pitched a scoreless eighth, was credited with the win, improving to 3-3. Owen Murphy, who allowed two runs in the 10th, took the loss, falling to 0-1.
