Red Sox Rally Past Angels, Sweep Three-Game Series
ANAHEIM, Calif. (Interstat) — Willson Contreras hit a three-run home run in the third inning and Jarren Duran added a two-run homer as the Boston Red Sox completed a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Angels with a 7-5 victory Sunday at Angel Stadium of Anaheim.
The Red Sox, who won the first two games of the series by scores of 8-1 and 5-2, improved to 40-48 on the season. The Angels fell to 36-55.
Boston trailed 2-0 after the first inning and 3-2 after the bottom of the second, but Contreras’ blast in the top of the third inning turned the game around. Tsung-Che Cheng singled and Wilyer Abreu reached on a fielding error by shortstop Zach Neto before Contreras drove a 1-0 pitch from Ryan Johnson over the left-center field wall for his 20th homer of the season, putting the Red Sox ahead 5-3.
The Red Sox added two more runs in the seventh inning. Anthony Seigler singled and Ceddanne Rafaela singled before Abreu’s sacrifice fly scored Seigler. Masataka Yoshida then singled to drive in Rafaela, making it 7-3.
The Angels scratched back with a run in the eighth on a Jo Adell single that scored Donovan Walton, and Neto hit his 19th home run of the season, a solo shot in the ninth inning, to cut the deficit to 7-5. But Aroldis Chapman struck out Denzer Guzman to end the game and record his 18th save.
Greg Weissert (1-2) earned the win with 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, allowing no hits and striking out two. Johnson (1-4) took the loss after giving up six hits and two earned runs over four innings while striking out six.
Chapman worked the ninth inning and allowed one run on one hit with two strikeouts. Boston relievers Tyron Guerrero, Garrett Whitlock and Weissert combined for 4 1/3 scoreless innings before Chapman entered.
Duran finished 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs. Contreras was 1 for 4 with the three-run homer. Neto led the Angels with a 3-for-5 performance that included a double, a home run and two RBIs.
The Angels took an early lead in the first inning. Neto singled, Denzer Guzman singled, and after a strikeout, Jorge Soler reached on a fielder’s choice that scored Neto. Jo Adell then singled to drive in Guzman for a 2-0 lead.
Boston answered in the second. Masataka Yoshida singled and Caleb Durbin reached on a forceout before Duran homered to center, his 13th of the season, tying the game 2-2.
The Angels reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the second. Logan O’Hoppe singled, Josh Lowe reached on a forceout, and Neto doubled to left-center, scoring Lowe for a 3-2 advantage.
Boston’s bullpen held the Angels scoreless from the third through the seventh innings. Guerrero pitched two hitless innings with one strikeout, and Whitlock added a perfect inning with two strikeouts.
Angels relievers José Fermin and Kirby Yates each threw two scoreless innings, but the damage done against Johnson and the subsequent relievers was enough for Boston.
Attendance was 35,992, and the game lasted 2 hours 57 minutes.
The Red Sox will travel to Chicago to face the White Sox on Tuesday. The Angels will visit the Texas Rangers on Tuesday.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Boston 6, Los Angeles Angels 5. The ELO model gave Boston a 57.60 percent probability to win. Boston was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 1.5. The total of 12 runs went over the over-under line of 8.5.
