Ryan pitches seven shutout innings as Twins beat Yankees 6‑1

NEW YORK (Interstat) — Joe Ryan pitched a complete game, striking out 11, and the Minnesota Twins used a five-run burst across the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to beat the New York Yankees 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at Yankee Stadium II.

The victory gave Minnesota two wins in the three-game series after the Twins lost the opener 5-2 on Friday and rebounded with an 11-4 rout Saturday. The Twins moved to 44-47, while the Yankees fell to 49-40.

Ryan (6-5) allowed five hits, walked one and yielded a single run in the ninth inning. He retired the side in order four times and faced only one batter over the minimum through the first six innings. Ryan’s 11 strikeouts matched a season high.

Yankees starter Ryan Weathers (3-7) lasted four innings, giving up six hits and four earned runs while striking out six. He left after the fourth trailing 2-0.

Minnesota struck first in the top of the first inning. Austin Martin led off with a double to right field, then moved to third on a single by Byron Buxton. After Buxton was caught stealing on a strikeout of Kody Clemens, Josh Bell drove in Martin with a single to right for a 1-0 lead.

The Twins added a run in the fourth. Royce Lewis walked and advanced to second on a strikeout. Brooks Lee then lined a single to left that scored Lewis, making it 2-0.

The pivotal sequence came in the fifth inning. Luke Keaschall was hit by a pitch to start the frame. Austin Martin drew a walk after a successful challenge overturned a called third strike. Kyler Fedko flied out, advancing both runners. Clemens struck out, but Josh Bell walked to load the bases. Royce Lewis then singled to center, driving in Keaschall and Martin to push the lead to 4-0. Victor Caratini ended the inning with a flyout.

Minnesota kept the pressure on in the sixth. Brooks Lee led off with a double to right. Ryan Kreidler reached on a fielding error by shortstop Anthony Volpe, and Keaschall bunted for a single to load the bases. Martin walked to force in Lee, making it 5-0. After a strikeout, Clemens lifted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Kreidler for a 6-0 cushion. The inning ended when Bell grounded into a fielder’s choice.

New York managed its only run in the ninth. Trent Grisham doubled to right and Ben Rice singled to right, putting runners at the corners with no outs. Jasson Dominguez grounded into a double play, shortstop Kreidler to first baseman Lewis, which allowed Grisham to score but erased Rice. Cody Bellinger flied out to center to end the game.

The Twins’ 12-hit attack was led by Brooks Lee, who finished with three hits, including a double and a single, and one RBI. Royce Lewis had two hits, a double and a single, and drove in three runs. Austin Martin also had two hits, scored twice and walked twice. The Yankees managed only five hits, with Grisham, Rice, Austin Wells, Cody Bellinger and Jazz Chisholm each collecting one. The team’s top three hitters – Anthony Volpe, Max Schuemann and Amed Rosario – went a combined 0 for 6.

Weathers took the loss for New York. Camilo Doval and Jake Bird each threw a scoreless inning in relief, with Bird allowing two hits and striking out one.

The game took 3 hours 1 minute and was witnessed by a crowd of 39,155.
