Mariners Crush Blue Jays 11‑0 Behind Gilbert’s Gem
SEATTLE (Interstat) — Randy Arozarena hit a grand slam and drove in four runs, Dominic Canzone added a two-run homer and the Seattle Mariners routed the Toronto Blue Jays 11-0 on Saturday evening at T-Mobile Park.
The Mariners scored five runs in the second inning, two in the fifth and four in the sixth, while starter Logan Gilbert held the Blue Jays to one hit over 7 1/3 innings, striking out seven without allowing an earned run. The victory improved Seattle to 46-44 on the season and dropped Toronto to 42-47 before a crowd of 41,181. The game was completed in 2 hours, 27 minutes.
Seattle’s offensive explosion began quietly enough. After a scoreless first inning, Toronto starter Shane Bieber retired the first two batters in the bottom of the second before Cole Young doubled to center field. Victor Robles followed with an RBI single to left, scoring Young and putting the Mariners ahead 1-0. Colt Emerson singled to center, moving Robles to third, and Bieber walked J.P. Crawford to load the bases.
Arozarena then stepped to the plate and launched a 1-0 pitch deep to left field, clearing the bases for his ninth homer of the season and giving Seattle a 5-0 lead. The grand slam was the pivotal moment of the game, effectively deciding the outcome before the third inning began. Canzone walked later in the frame, but Bieber got Cal Raleigh to ground out to end the inning.
Toronto’s offense never threatened. Gilbert retired the first nine batters he faced, striking out Vladimir Guerrero Jr. twice and Kazuma Okamoto once. The Blue Jays’ only hit came in the top of the fifth when Yohendrick Piñango singled to center field with two outs. Sean Keys followed with a lineout to left field, and Gilbert struck out the side in the sixth. He allowed only that single and faced one batter over the minimum through seven frames.
Seattle added two runs in the fifth. Arozarena walked to lead off, and Canzone followed with his 14th home run of the season, a fly ball to right-center field that made it 7-0. Bieber exited after 4 2/3 innings, charged with seven earned runs on five hits and three walks with four strikeouts. He fell to 0-1 on the season.
The Mariners broke the game open further in the sixth against the Toronto bullpen. Colt Emerson led off with a bunt single, then J.P. Crawford popped out. Arozarena reached on a throwing error by third baseman Kazuma Okamoto, allowing Emerson to advance to third. Canzone singled to right field, scoring Emerson and moving Arozarena to second. Raleigh then crushed a three-run homer to right field, his ninth, extending Seattle’s lead to 11-0. Josh Naylor singled later in the inning, but Luke Raley struck out on a foul tip to end the frame.
Seattle’s lineup compiled 11 hits, with Arozarena finishing 3-for-4, Canzone 2-for-4 with the homer and three RBIs, and Colt Emerson 2-for-4. Robles was 1-for-4 with a run batted in, Young 1-for-3 with a double, and Naylor 1-for-4. Victor Robles also struck out twice, and J.P. Crawford went 0-for-3 with a walk.
Toronto’s only hit was Piñango’s single. Every other Blue Jays batter was held without a hit, and the team struck out 10 times. Bieber took the loss in his first decision of the year. Gilbert improved to 7-5.
Seattle’s defense was solid, and the bullpen finished the game without incident. After Gilbert exited with one out in the eighth, reliever Riley Pint retired the only two batters he faced. Ryne Stanek worked a perfect ninth, striking out two.
The win was Seattle’s second in a row over Toronto, following a 2-0 loss Friday in which the Blue Jays shut out the Mariners. The series concludes Sunday.
Seattle’s next 10 games include a Sunday finale against Toronto, then a road trip to Miami, Tampa Bay, and a homestand against San Francisco. Toronto’s upcoming schedule includes the Sunday game, then a trip to San Francisco and San Diego before returning home to face the Chicago White Sox.
The Mariners have now won four of their last five games. The Blue Jays have lost three of their last four and six of their last nine.
Seattle’s 11-run outburst was its highest scoring output since a 10-2 win at Washington on June 12. Toronto’s one-hit performance matched its season low.
Arozarena’s grand slam was the Mariners’ second of the season. The last Seattle player to hit a grand slam at T-Mobile Park was Julio Rodríguez in 2023.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of 5-3 in favor of Seattle, and the ELO system gave the Mariners a 53.30 percent probability to win. Seattle was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 1.5. The total score of 11 went under the over/under line of 7.5.
