Giants hold off Rockies in Fourth of July victory

DENVER (Interstat) — The San Francisco Giants used a four-run first inning and held off a late Colorado Rockies rally to take a 6-4 victory on Saturday, July 4, 2026, at Coors Field.

The Giants, who entered the game with a 36-51 record, improved to 37-51 while the Rockies fell to 36-54. The game was played before a sellout crowd of 48,635 and lasted 2 hours, 52 minutes.

San Francisco wasted no time against Rockies starter Sean Sullivan. With one out in the first inning, Luis Arraez singled and Casey Schmitt doubled, putting runners at second and third. Rafael Devers walked to load the bases, and Jung Hoo Lee grounded into a force out that scored Arraez. Willy Adames followed with a double to left field, scoring Schmitt and Lee. Bryce Eldridge then doubled, plating Adames to give the Giants a 4-0 lead.

Colorado responded swiftly in the bottom of the inning. After two quick outs, Hunter Goodman singled and Tyler Freeman walked. Cole Carrigg then crushed a three-run homer to left field, his fourth of the season, cutting the deficit to 4-3. The Rockies had a chance for more when Jake McCarthy singled, but he was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double.

The Giants added a run in the second inning. Heliot Ramos doubled and Arraez singled him home, making it 5-3. In the third, Eldridge hit his seventh home run of the season, a solo shot to right-center, extending the lead to 6-3.

That was all the offense San Francisco would need, though the Rockies made it interesting in the ninth. Reliever Caleb Kilian, looking to secure his eighth save, allowed a leadoff single to Carrigg. After a groundout moved Carrigg to second, Kilian struck out Mickey Moniak, but TJ Rumfield lined a single to left that scored Carrigg, trimming the lead to 6-4. Kilian then struck out Troy Johnston to end the game.

Robbie Ray earned the win, improving to 8-6. The left-hander allowed three earned runs on five hits over six innings, striking out four and walking three. Sullivan took the loss, falling to 0-3 after allowing six earned runs on nine hits over 5 1/3 innings. Kilian’s save was his eighth.

The Giants’ offense collected 14 hits, led by Adames, who went 2 for 4 with two RBIs, and Eldridge, who went 2 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs. Carrigg was the standout for Colorado, finishing 2 for 4 with the home run and three RBIs.

Relief pitching was a factor for both sides. For the Rockies, Juan Mejia tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts, Antonio Senzatela worked a scoreless frame, and Jordan Romano struck out two in a scoreless inning. For San Francisco, Sam Hentges and Dylan Smith each pitched a scoreless inning of relief, with Hentges striking out one.

The game marked the third meeting between the two teams in four days. Colorado had won the previous contest 15-3 on Friday, while the Giants had taken two of three from the Rockies in late May. The series continues Sunday.
