Alvarez Powers Astros Past Rays in Walk-Off Thriller

HOUSTON (Interstat) — Yordan Alvarez homered twice, including a two-run walk-off shot in the bottom of the ninth inning, to lift the Houston Astros to a 10-8 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday night before 37,457 at Daikin Park.

Alvarez’s second homer of the game, a towering fly ball to center field off Rays reliever Casey Legumina, scored Jose Altuve and capped a seesaw battle that saw the Astros erase a five-run deficit and then rally from a one-run hole in the seventh. The victory snapped Houston’s three-game losing streak and improved the Astros to 44-47, while the Rays fell to 52-34.

The game’s decisive moment came in the bottom of the ninth with the score tied at 8. Altuve led off with a walk against Legumina, who had entered to start the inning. Alvarez, who had homered in the first inning, then crushed a 1-0 pitch over the wall in straightaway center for his 29th homer of the season, scoring Altuve and ending the game.

Houston’s comeback began in earnest in the fourth inning, when Yainer Diaz hit a two-run homer to right center, scoring Christian Walker and cutting Tampa Bay’s lead to 6-4. Diaz finished 1-for-4 with the homer and two RBIs.

The Rays had built an early 6-2 lead behind a three-run third inning and a run in the fourth. Junior Caminero homered in the first inning, and Richie Palacios added a two-run shot in the second. Tampa Bay scored three in the third on a sacrifice fly by Victor Mesa Jr. and a run-scoring single by Jonny DeLuca. Caminero’s fielder’s choice in the fourth, aided by a throwing error from shortstop Nick Allen, made it 6-2.

Tampa Bay pushed its lead to 7-4 in the seventh when DeLuca homered to left, his fifth of the year. But Houston answered with a four-run bottom of the seventh to tie the game. Taylor Trammell singled, and Allen doubled to put runners at second and third. Altuve walked to load the bases. Alvarez sacrificed Trammell home, and Isaac Paredes singled to score Allen, making it 7-6. After a strikeout, pinch-hitter Zach Dezenzo singled to right, driving in Altuve to tie the game at 8.

The Rays had taken a 1-0 lead in the first on Caminero’s solo homer, but Houston answered in the bottom half on Alvarez’s first homer, a two-run shot that scored Altuve, who had tripled. Tampa Bay regained the lead with two in the second on Palacios’ homer, then added three in the third to go up 6-2. The Rays added a run in the seventh on DeLuca’s homer, but Houston’s four-run seventh tied it.

Neither team scored in the eighth. The Rays went quietly in the ninth, with Victor Mesa Jr. and DeLuca flying out and Richie Palacios walking before Taylor Walls struck out. That set the stage for Altuve and Alvarez in the ninth.

Altuve finished 2-for-3 with a triple, a double, a walk and three runs scored. Alvarez was 2-for-4 with two homers, a sacrifice fly and five RBIs. Dezenzo went 1-for-1 with an RBI. Allen had a double and a walk. Diaz homered. For Tampa Bay, Caminero homered and singled, drove in two runs and stole a base. Palacios homered and singled, and DeLuca homered and singled with two RBIs.

Houston starter Hunter Brown lasted four innings, allowing six hits and seven earned runs with three strikeouts. Cristian Javier pitched two innings of relief, giving up two hits and one earned run with four strikeouts. Nate Pearson tossed a scoreless eighth. Josh Hader earned the win with a perfect ninth, striking out one, improving to 3-0.

Tampa Bay starter Casey Legumina took the loss, falling to 2-2. He allowed two runs on two hits in one inning of work.

The game lasted 3 hours, 3 minutes.
