Twins hit four homers, defeat Yankees 11‑4

NEW YORK (Interstat) — Josh Bell homered twice and drove in three runs, and the Minnesota Twins erupted for four runs in the eighth inning to defeat the New York Yankees 11-4 on Saturday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.

Bell went 3 for 5 with two home runs, a double and three RBIs, leading a 11-hit attack that spoiled Independence Day for the Yankees in front of 40,156. Kody Clemens added a home run and three RBIs, and Trevor Larnach homered and drove in a run for Minnesota, which improved to 43-47. The Yankees, who had won the series opener Friday, fell to 49-39.

The Twins jumped on Yankees starter Brendan Beck from the outset. In the first inning, Trevor Larnach walked, and Byron Buxton doubled to center field to drive in Larnach. Clemens followed by launching a two-run homer to right center, giving Minnesota a 3-0 lead.

Minnesota extended the lead in the second. Luke Keaschall homered to right center, and Alex Jackson added a solo shot to left center, making it 5-0.

The Twins added a run in the fourth when Larnach homered to right field, pushing the lead to 6-0.

The Yankees got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Jasson Domínguez homered to right center, cutting the deficit to 6-1.

New York pulled closer in the fifth. Ryan McMahon walked, and Max Schuemann followed with a two-run homer to left center, making it 6-3. Later in the inning, Cody Bellinger doubled to right, scoring Trent Grisham and trimming the Twins’ lead to 6-4.

Minnesota answered in the seventh. Bell led off with a solo homer to left field, restoring a three-run lead at 7-4.

The Twins broke the game open in the eighth. Keaschall reached on a fielding error by Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. Larnach singled to right, sending Keaschall to third. Buxton then lifted a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Keaschall. Clemens singled to right, driving in Austin Martin, who had entered as a pinch runner. Bell then crushed his second home run of the game, a two-run shot to right center, making it 11-4.

Twins reliever Taylor Rogers pitched two-thirds of an inning of hitless relief to earn the win, improving to 4-3. Rogers allowed no hits and struck out one. Beck took the loss, his first of the season, falling to 0-1. Beck surrendered six runs on five hits over three innings, walking three and striking out two.

Minnesota starter Marco Raya worked two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out two. Travis Adams followed with one inning, giving up three hits but no runs, striking out one. Rogers, Adams and the rest of the Twins bullpen held the Yankees scoreless over the final four innings.

Byron Buxton finished 1 for 3 with two RBIs on a double and a sacrifice fly. Kody Clemens was 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs. Trevor Larnach went 2 for 3 with a home run, a walk and an RBI.

For the Yankees, Jasson Domínguez hit a home run and a double. Max Schuemann homered and drove in two runs. Cody Bellinger doubled and drove in a run. The Yankees managed seven hits but struck out nine times.

The game was a stark contrast to Friday’s series opener, which the Yankees won 5-2. The Twins had lost seven of their previous nine games entering Saturday but snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory.

The key moment came in the eighth inning when the Twins turned a 7-4 game into a blowout with four runs. The inning was sparked by an error, a hit and a sacrifice fly, culminating in Bell’s second homer of the afternoon. The Twins had not scored more than three runs in an inning all day until that point.

The Yankees failed to capitalize on scoring chances in the sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth, they loaded the bases with two singles and a walk, but Amed Rosario struck out and Paul Goldschmidt flied out to end the threat. In the seventh, Ben Rice was hit by a pitch, but the next three batters made outs.

The Twins’ bullpen combined for four scoreless innings after Raya and Adams worked the first three. Rogers was the pitcher of record when the Twins took the lead in the seventh, making him eligible for the win.

Minnesota next plays the Yankees on Sunday in the series finale. The Twins then return home to face the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday. After that, they host the Los Angeles Angels before traveling to Chicago to play the Cubs after the All-Star break.

The Yankees continue their homestand Sunday against the Twins before heading to Tampa Bay for a four-game series starting Monday. They then visit the Washington Nationals before returning home to face the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Minnesota Twins 5, New York Yankees 3. Interstat’s ELO system had projected the Yankees with a 65.30 percent probability to win. The Yankees had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 1.5. The total score of 15 went under the over/under line of 9.5.
