Hernández grand slam lifts Dodgers past Padres 4‑3

LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — Teoscar Hernández hit a grand slam in the seventh inning, lifting the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 4-3 victory over the San Diego Padres on Friday night at Dodger Stadium.

The Dodgers, who improved to 58-31, trailed 3-0 before Hernández turned the game with one swing. San Diego had held the lead for six innings behind a strong start from Michael King, but the Dodgers’ offense erupted in the seventh against the Padres’ bullpen.

King, a right-hander for San Diego, tossed six innings, allowing three hits and two earned runs while striking out five. He left with the Padres ahead 3-0 after a shutdown sixth inning. Los Angeles starter Shohei Ohtani matched King’s workload, going six innings and allowing seven hits and three earned runs with nine strikeouts. Ohtani yielded solo runs in the first, fourth and sixth innings.

San Diego struck first in the top of the opening frame. Fernando Tatis Jr. walked, Jake Cronenworth also walked, and after Manny Machado struck out, Gavin Sheets singled to right field, scoring Tatis. That gave the Padres a 1-0 lead.

The Padres added to their advantage in the fourth inning when Jackson Merrill led off with a solo home run to center field, his 10th of the season. Merrill finished 2 for 4 with a homer and a run batted in.

In the sixth, Merrill singled and later scored on a double by Xander Bogaerts, who drove in his 1st run of the night. Bogaerts went 1 for 4 with an RBI. That made it 3-0.

Los Angeles threatened in the bottom of the sixth when Dalton Rushing singled and Andy Pages walked, but King induced a groundout from Freddie Freeman to end the inning.

The Dodgers broke through in the seventh against Padres reliever Adrian Morejon. Mookie Betts walked to lead off. Max Muncy then singled, putting runners at first and second. Kyle Tucker reached on a fielder’s choice, but a fielding error by second baseman Jake Cronenworth loaded the bases. Hernández then crushed a 1-0 pitch to center field for his eighth home run of the year, a grand slam that gave the Dodgers a 4-3 lead.

Hernández, who had gone 0 for 4 in the previous night’s 12-7 win over San Diego and was 0 for 3 with a sacrifice fly against on June 30, snapped out of his mini-slump with the decisive blow. He finished the game 1 for 4 with four RBIs.

Morejon, who took the loss, fell to 6-2. He allowed four runs, three earned, on two hits and two walks in one inning of work.

Kyle Hurt earned the win for Los Angeles, improving to 3-1. He pitched a scoreless seventh inning, allowing one hit and striking out one. Edgardo Henriquez tossed a scoreless eighth with one strikeout. Tanner Scott recorded the save, his 12th of the season, with a perfect ninth inning in which he struck out all three batters he faced.

The Padres, now 43-44, managed eight hits but left seven runners on base. Merrill and Cronenworth each had two hits. For Los Angeles, only five hits were recorded, but the grand slam proved enough.

The attendance was 49,578. The game lasted 2 hours, 22 minutes.

Friday’s win extended the Dodgers’ lead in the National League West and gave them their second straight victory over the Padres. San Diego had lost its fourth consecutive game overall, following a 23-3 defeat at Chicago on Wednesday and a 12-7 loss to the Dodgers on Thursday.

The two teams continue their four-game series Saturday. San Diego then returns home to host Arizona, while Los Angeles hosts Colorado before a trip to Arizona.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Los Angeles Dodgers 7, San Diego Padres 4. Interstat’s ELO system gave the Dodgers a 65.80 percent probability to win. Los Angeles was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total of seven runs went over the over/under line of eight.
