Red Sox Top Angels 5‑2 Behind Bennett’s Strong Start

ANAHEIM, Calif. (Interstat) — Jake Bennett pitched 7 2/3 strong innings and the Boston Red Sox scored early and often to beat the Los Angeles Angels 5-2 on Friday night at Angel Stadium.

Bennett allowed five hits and two earned runs while striking out six to improve to 3-3 on the season. Aroldis Chapman worked the ninth for his 17th save, allowing two hits and striking out one. The Red Sox snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 38-48, while the Angels fell to 36-53.

Boston jumped on Angels starter Reid Detmers in the second inning. Romy Gonzalez led off with a triple to right field, and Jarren Duran followed with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Gonzalez for a 1-0 lead.

The Red Sox broke the game open in the third. Wilyer Abreu doubled to right, and Willson Contreras singled to put runners at the corners. Caleb Durbin walked to load the bases, and Gonzalez singled to right, driving in Abreu and Contreras to make it 3-0. Duran then reached on a bunt single that first baseman Nolan Schanuel misplayed, allowing Durbin to score. The error extended the inning and gave Boston a 4-0 lead.

Boston added a run in the fifth when Durbin homered to left, his eighth of the season, pushing the lead to 5-0.

Angels starter Reid Detmers was charged with the loss after allowing seven hits and five earned runs in five innings. He struck out five and walked two.

The Angels mounted a rally in the eighth. Jose Siri led off with a home run to right-center, his fifth, cutting the deficit to 5-1. Josh Lowe singled, and after a popout, Zach Neto singled to right, scoring Lowe to make it 5-2. Bennett was lifted after the Neto single, and Garrett Whitlock recorded the final out of the inning on a groundout.

Chapman entered in the ninth and allowed singles to Jorge Soler and Vaughn Grissom but induced a game-ending double play from Jo Adell.

The most important stretch of the game was Boston’s three-run third inning, which built a commanding lead and gave Bennett enough cushion to work efficiently. Bennett retired 10 of the first 11 batters he faced and did not allow a hit until the fifth inning. He struck out the side in the seventh and faced only one batter in the eighth before being replaced.

Key performances included Gonzalez finishing 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a triple. Durbin added a homer and an RBI in a 1-for-3 night. For the Angels, Siri homered and drove in a run, and Mitch Farris, Kirby Yates and José Fermin each threw scoreless relief, combining for four innings with five strikeouts.

The game, played before 43,747 fans, lasted 2 hours 35 minutes.

Boston’s previous five games had included a sweep at the hands of Washington, losing 10-2 and 8-1 before winning 6-3. The Red Sox had dropped four of five entering the night. Los Angeles had lost four straight, including a 1-0 defeat at Seattle on Thursday.

Boston continues its road trip with the second game of the series Saturday. The Red Sox then travel to Chicago to face the White Sox from Tuesday through Thursday, followed by a weekend series at the New York Mets. The Angels remain at home to host Boston on Saturday and Sunday before a road trip to Texas and Minnesota.

The Interstat game simulator projected a 7-6 final score in favor of the Red Sox. The Interstat ELO system gave Boston a 56.90 percent probability of winning. Los Angeles entered as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5, and the total of seven runs went over the over-under line of eight.
