Rockies pound Giants 15‑3 behind McCarthy’s grand slam
DENVER (Interstat) — The Colorado Rockies erupted for seven runs in the fifth inning, keyed by Jake McCarthy’s grand slam, and rolled past the San Francisco Giants 15-3 on Friday night at Coors Field before a crowd of 47,655.
The game lasted 2 hours, 53 minutes.
The Rockies improved to 36-53, while the Giants fell to 36-51.
McCarthy went 4-for-5 with two home runs and six RBIs, including his second homer of the night — a 396-foot blast to right-center field in the fifth that broke the game open. He also singled in the first, third and second innings. Ezequiel Tovar drove in three runs on a three-hit night that included a two-run homer in the second. Cole Carrigg added two hits, a walk and three RBIs, including a triple in the third that set up a run and another triple in the fifth that drove in two.
Ryan Feltner (3-2) earned the win, allowing six hits and two earned runs over six innings while striking out nine. Gabriel Hughes recorded his first save of the season, working three scoreless innings with one strikeout, surrendering two hits.
Logan Webb (5-6) took the loss, allowing seven runs on nine hits and three walks over three-plus innings. He struck out four.
The Giants jumped on the board first in the third, when Casey Schmitt singled home Luis Arraez, who had doubled. San Francisco added a run in the fourth on Bryce Eldridge’s RBI single and another in the sixth on Rafael Devers’ solo home run, his 16th of the season. Devers finished 2-for-4 with a homer and an RBI. Schmitt went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
But Colorado’s offense overwhelmed the Giants from the start. McCarthy led off the bottom of the first with his first home run, an opposite-field shot to right-center. The Rockies scored two more in the inning on a bases-loaded walk to Carrigg and a run-scoring double play by Tyler Freeman, tying the game 3-3.
Tovar’s two-run homer in the second put the Rockies ahead 5-3, and they never trailed again. McCarthy’s RBI single in the third extended the lead to 7-3.
The decisive fifth inning began with a walk to Edouard Julien, followed by singles from Kyle Karros and Tovar to load the bases. McCarthy then crushed a 1-1 pitch from reliever Ryan Walker over the wall in right-center for a grand slam, his ninth homer of the season, making it 11-3. After a groundout, Hunter Goodman doubled, and TJ Rumfield walked. Carrigg followed with a triple to left-center, scoring Goodman and Rumfield. Tyler Freeman singled in Carrigg for the 14th run.
The Rockies added a run in the eighth when Karros tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Tovar.
Colorado pounded out 18 hits. Karros went 3-for-4 with a triple. Tovar added three hits. Freeman had two hits and an RBI. The Giants managed eight hits, including two each from Devers and Schmitt.
Both teams grounded into two double plays.
Pitch counts for the Giants: 22 strikes, 42 balls, 22 balls in play. For the Rockies: 15 strikes, 61 balls, 15 balls in play.
The Rockies had lost two of three to Miami earlier in the week but rebounded with authority. The Giants had won their previous game against Arizona on July 1 but had lost four of their last five entering Friday.
The teams continue their series Saturday at Coors Field. After that, the Giants head home for a three-game set against Toronto, while the Rockies travel to Los Angeles to face the Dodgers.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of San Francisco 5, Colorado 4. Interstat’s ELO system gave San Francisco a 60.10 percent probability to win. The Giants were installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total score of 18 went under the over-under line of 11.
