Olson’s two homers power Braves past Mets
SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. (Interstat) — Matt Olson homered twice and drove in two runs, powering the Atlanta Braves to a 5-3 victory over the New York Mets on Friday night at Truist Park in front of 39,138 fans in 2 hours, 40 minutes.
Olson’s second solo shot, in the eighth inning, proved decisive after the Braves had built a one-run lead. Grant Holmes earned the win, allowing one earned run on five hits over five innings with two strikeouts, improving to 5-4. Raisel Iglesias pitched a scoreless ninth to notch his 17th save. Christian Scott took the loss for New York, falling to 2-1.
The Mets, who entered with a 36-52 record after losing four of their previous five, grabbed an early lead in the third inning. A.J. Ewing reached on a fielding error by Olson at first base, and Juan Soto followed by crushing his 18th home run of the season over the left-field wall, giving New York a 2-0 advantage.
Atlanta answered swiftly. In the bottom of the second, Mauricio Dubón drew a walk and Michael Harris II deposited a 1-0 pitch over the center-field fence for his 15th homer, tying the game at 2-2. The Braves then took the lead in the third when Ozzie Albies launched a solo home run, his 14th, to right field, knotting the score at 3-3 after the Mets had regained a lead. Harris’s blast had already made it 2-2, and Albies’ shot tied it again after Soto’s two-run homer.
The Mets threatened in the fourth, putting runners at second and third with one out after Francisco Alvarez singled and Brett Baty doubled, but Luis Torrens struck out swinging to end the inning. New York stranded two more in the fifth when Bo Bichette singled but was left on base.
Atlanta broke the tie in the fifth. With one out, Olson launched his 21st homer of the season to right-center field, giving the Braves a 4-3 lead. The Mets put a runner on in the sixth when Alvarez singled, but could not advance him.
The Braves added insurance in the eighth. Olson again stepped to the plate and hit his second homer of the night, a solo shot to right field, his 22nd, extending the lead to 5-3. Harris followed with a single, but the Braves could not add more.
New York mounted a rally in the ninth. With one out, Luis Torrens singled to right field. Tyrone Taylor struck out, but Soto lined a single to right, sending Torrens to third. Bichette then singled to right, scoring Torrens and putting runners at first and third. But with the potential tying run on base, Francisco Lindor grounded out to second baseman Ozzie Albies, ending the game.
Despite outhitting the Braves 10-5, the Mets fell short. Soto finished 2-for-4 with the home run and two RBIs. Bichette had two hits and an RBI. Alvarez also had two hits. For Atlanta, Olson was 2-for-3 with two homers and two RBIs. Harris went 2-for-4 with his two-run homer. Holmes was efficient, striking out two over five frames, while Didier Fuentes tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit and striking out one.
The loss dropped the Mets to 36-52, while the Braves improved to 51-35, winning for the fifth time in their last seven games. The two teams continue their four-game series Saturday.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Atlanta 3, New York 2, and its ELO system gave the Braves a 62.00 percent probability to win. Atlanta was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 1.5. The total of eight runs went over the over-under line of 9.5.
