DENVER (Interstat) — Mickey Moniak drove in three runs with a triple and a home run, and the Colorado Rockies avoided a three-game sweep by defeating the Miami Marlins 6-3 on Wednesday at Coors Field.
The Rockies scored four runs in the fifth inning to erase a 2-1 deficit, then added an insurance run in the seventh after Miami had pulled within one. Colorado snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 34-53, while the Marlins dropped to 46-41.
Kyle Freeland (2-7) earned the win, allowing two runs on six hits over five innings while striking out seven. Colorado had struck first in the bottom of the first when Moniak led off the inning with his 14th home run, a solo shot to center field. Meyer settled in after that, retiring the next three batters and allowing only a single over the next three frames.
The Rockies’ decisive fifth inning began with singles from Troy Johnston and an error by second baseman Sanoja that put runners on first and second with no outs. After a force out at third, Jake McCarthy grounded out to advance runners, and Moniak followed with a two-run triple to right field, tying the game at 3. Hunter Goodman then launched his 27th home run to left-center, a two-run shot that gave Colorado a 5-3 lead.
Miami responded in the seventh. Pinch-hitter Joe Mack hit an inside-the-park home run, his sixth of the season, scoring from a sharp fly ball to right-center that cut the deficit to 5-4. But Colorado answered immediately in the bottom half when Kyle Karros led off with his sixth home run, a solo drive to center field off Marlins reliever John King, restoring the three-run cushion.
Bernardino closed the game with a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out Kyle Stowers to end it.
Miami outhit Colorado 7-6 in the first three innings but managed only one hit after the fifth. The Marlins left seven runners on base, while the Rockies turned two double plays.
Goodman finished 1-for-4 with two RBIs and his 27th homer. Sanoja went 1-for-2 with a triple and two RBIs, and Mack was 1-for-1 with the inside-the-park homer. Moniak had three hits in four at-bats, including the homer and triple, raising his average.
