Tigers Top Yankees in 11 Innings Behind Melton’s Gem
NEW YORK (Interstat) — The Detroit Tigers scored four runs in the 11th inning to complete a three-game sweep of the New York Yankees with a 6-2 victory Wednesday afternoon at Yankee Stadium II.
The game remained scoreless until the third inning, when Detroit shortstop Kevin McGonigle hit his seventh home run of the season, a solo shot to right-center field. The Tigers added another run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Riley Greene that scored Dillon Dingler, making it 2-0.
New York tied the game in the bottom of the ninth. Amed Rosario led off with his ninth homer, a line drive to left field. After Jazz Chisholm Jr. singled and Anthony Volpe singled through the left side, the Yankees had runners on first and second with no outs. Spencer Jones then popped out, and the rally stalled, but the game went to extra innings.
Both teams went quietly in the 10th. The Yankees threatened in the bottom of the inning when Jones reached third on a sacrifice bunt, but Keider Montero, who had entered in the 10th, intentionally walked Ben Rice and struck out Ali Sánchez to end the inning.
In the top of the 11th, with the automatic runner on second, Detroit broke through. After two groundouts advanced McGonigle to third, the Tigers loaded the bases on an intentional walk to Greene, a walk to pinch hitter Hao-Yu Lee and a walk to Spencer Torkelson, forcing in McGonigle. Zach McKinstry then delivered the decisive blow, a bases-clearing single to right field. A throwing error by catcher Ali Sánchez allowed McKinstry to advance to third. He was left stranded when James Outman flied out, but Detroit had a 6-2 lead.
Montero struck out the side in the bottom of the 11th, including a called third strike on Chisholm to end the game. Montero earned the win, improving to 5-5. He pitched two scoreless innings, allowing no hits and striking out three. Camilo Doval took the loss, falling to 3-1.
The Tigers collected six hits, including McGonigle’s home run and a double by Dingler. McKinstry finished 1 for 5 with two RBIs. Greene had no hits but drove in a run. Kerry Carpenter singled and reached on catcher interference. Detroit pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts.
The Yankees managed seven hits, with Rosario, Chisholm, Volpe and Jones each recording one. Rosario’s homer was the only extra-base hit for New York. Drew Anderson pitched two innings in relief for Detroit, allowing five hits and two runs with one strikeout. He was charged with the blown save after Rosario’s homer. Detroit starter Troy Melton threw six innings, allowing no runs on three hits, walking one and striking out seven.
The victory improved Detroit’s record to 38-49, while New York fell to 48-38. The Tigers have now won three straight games, all against the Yankees, after losing five of their previous six. The Yankees have lost four in a row, including Wednesday’s defeat, after dropping three of four in their previous series against Boston.
Attendance was 37,117. The game took 2 hours, 59 minutes.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Detroit Tigers 4, New York Yankees 2. Interstat’s ELO system had projected N.Y. Yankees with a 64.30 percent probability to win. N.Y. Yankees had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of -1.5. The total score of 8 went over the over/under line of 9.5.
The series sweep marked the first time Detroit had taken all three games from New York since June 2021. The Tigers now head to Texas for a three-game set against the Rangers starting Thursday. The Yankees will host the Minnesota Twins for a three-game series beginning Friday.
