Phillies blank Pirates 8‑0 behind Sánchez’s dominant start
PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — Cristopher Sánchez pitched seven dominant innings, Justin Crawford drove in three runs and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-0 Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park.
Sánchez allowed three hits, struck out nine and walked one as he improved to 10-3. He retired 14 of the last 15 batters he faced and did not allow a runner past second base. Bubba Chandler took the loss for Pittsburgh, dropping to 3-8 after allowing two runs on five hits over 5 1/3 innings with four strikeouts and two walks.
The Phillies scored two runs in the second inning, three in the seventh and three in the eighth. Trea Turner hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning and finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Crawford, the rookie center fielder, went 3-for-3 with a double, a sacrifice bunt and three RBIs.
Philadelphia’s eight-run outburst came after the Pirates had won the series opener 11-7 on Monday night. The Phillies improved to 48-38 while the Pirates fell to 43-43.
The game remained scoreless through the first inning as both starters worked efficiently. Sánchez struck out the side in the top of the first, needing only 12 pitches. Chandler matched him with a 1-2-3 bottom half.
The Phillies broke through in the second inning. Alec Bohm singled to left field with one out. Bryson Stott grounded out, moving Bohm to second. J.T. Realmuto was hit by a pitch and Gabriel Rincones Jr. singled to load the bases. Crawford then lined a single to left field, scoring Bohm and Realmuto for a 2-0 lead.
Pittsburgh threatened in the fourth inning when Nick Gonzales singled with two outs and Bryan Reynolds on second after a force out, but Endy Rodríguez struck out on a foul tip to end the inning. The Pirates left two runners on base again in the fifth after Billy Cook doubled with one out, but Henry Davis popped out and Konnor Griffin grounded out.
Philadelphia added to its lead in the seventh against Pirates reliever Isaac Mattson. Gabriel Rincones Jr. walked and was replaced by pinch runner Derek Hill. Crawford sacrificed Hill to second, and Turner doubled to left field to score Hill. Kyle Schwarber singled, moving Turner to third, and Bryce Harper singled to right to score Turner. Brandon Marsh grounded into a force out that scored Schwarber, making it 5-0.
The Phillies put the game away in the eighth against Pittsburgh’s bullpen. Stott singled to left field with one out. After two strikeouts, Crawford lined a single to center to score Stott. Turner then crushed a 1-0 pitch to right-center field for his ninth home run of the season, scoring Crawford and making it 8-0.
Turner’s home run was the defining moment of the game. It came after the Phillies had already built a comfortable lead and effectively ended any remaining hope for the Pirates. The blast traveled an estimated 418 feet and capped a three-run inning that extended Philadelphia’s advantage to eight runs.
The Pirates managed only five hits in the game, all singles except Cook’s double. Esmerlyn Valdez had two hits, while Gonzales, Cook and Rodríguez each had one. Pittsburgh went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left seven runners on base.
Philadelphia’s 12 hits included two each from Turner, Schwarber, Crawford and Stott. Bohm also had a hit. The Phillies were 5-for-12 with runners in scoring position.
The game was played before a crowd of 41,710 and lasted 2 hours, 35 minutes.
The victory was Philadelphia’s fourth in its last five games. The Phillies had lost the series opener but rebounded behind Sánchez, who has been one of the National League’s most consistent starters. He lowered his ERA to 2.79 with the outing.
Pittsburgh had won four of its previous five games before Tuesday, including an 11-7 victory in the series opener. The Pirates had scored at least four runs in seven of their previous eight games but were shut out for the first time since May 17, when the Phillies also blanked them 6-0 in Pittsburgh.
Chandler, a rookie right-hander, had been solid in recent starts but could not get through the sixth inning. He left after allowing a leadoff single in the sixth but was charged with two runs. The Pirates bullpen allowed six runs over 2 2/3 innings.
The Phillies got contributions from the bottom of the order. Crawford, batting eighth, reached base in all four plate appearances and stole a base. Rincones, batting seventh, walked and singled. The top of the order also did damage, with Turner and Harper driving in runs.
Defensively, the Phillies turned two double plays and did not commit an error. The Pirates committed no errors but could not generate any sustained offense against Sánchez.
The series continues Wednesday night with the second of four games at Citizens Bank Park. Pittsburgh will send right-hander Mitch Keller to the mound against Philadelphia right-hander Zack Wheeler. The Pirates then travel to Washington for a three-game series before returning home to host Atlanta. The Phillies visit Kansas City after the series.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Philadelphia 7, Pittsburgh 5. Interstat’s ELO system gave the Phillies a 62.40 percent probability to win. Philadelphia was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5.
