Cole Young’s Two Homers Power Mariners Past Angels
SEATTLE (Interstat) — Cole Young homered twice and drove in three runs, and George Kirby pitched eight strong innings as the Seattle Mariners defeated the Los Angeles Angels 6-2 on Monday night at T-Mobile Park.
Young went 3 for 3, hitting solo home runs in the third and sixth innings to lead the Mariners to their 43rd victory against 43 losses. Kirby allowed two earned runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts and no walks to improve to 7-7.
Ryan Johnson took the loss for the Angels, falling to 1-3. He allowed one earned run on four hits with three strikeouts across five innings. The Angels dropped to 36-50.
The Angels struck first in the top of the first inning. Zach Neto doubled to center field, then scored on a single by Denzer Guzman that was deflected by first baseman Josh Naylor. The Angels added another run in the third when Neto homered to left-center field, his 18th of the season.
Seattle answered in the bottom of the third. Young led off with a home run to center field, his eighth of the year, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
The Mariners took the lead in the fourth. With two outs, Randy Arozarena was hit by a pitch and Josh Naylor reached on a fielding error by third baseman Denzer Guzman. Cal Raleigh then singled to left field, scoring both Arozarena and Naylor to put Seattle ahead 3-2.
Johnson retired the side in order in the fifth, but the Mariners broke the game open in the sixth. Dominic Canzone led off with a solo home run to right-center field, his 13th, extending the lead to 4-2. After a groundout and a walk to Naylor, Raleigh struck out, bringing Young to the plate. Young crushed his second homer of the night, a two-run shot to right field that scored Naylor and made it 6-2.
Kirby settled in after the early Angels runs. He retired 12 of the final 14 batters he faced, allowing only a double to Josh Lowe in the fifth and a double to Lowe in the eighth. Kirby induced two double plays and struck out seven.
José A. Ferrer pitched a scoreless ninth inning for Seattle, allowing one hit and striking out one.
Neto finished 2 for 3 with a double, a home run and an RBI for the Angels. Lowe went 2 for 3 with two doubles. Guzman was 1 for 4 with an RBI. The Angels managed only two hits after the third inning.
Mitch Farris relieved Johnson for the Angels and pitched three innings, allowing two earned runs on two hits with three strikeouts.
Seattle’s offense was held to six hits, but three were home runs. Canzone was 1 for 4 with a home run and an RBI. Raleigh drove in two runs with a single. J.P. Crawford, Julio Rodríguez and Victor Robles each went 0 for 4.
The game took 2 hours, 10 minutes before an announced crowd of 37,100.
The Angels took an early lead on Neto’s double and Guzman’s RBI single in the first, but the Mariners responded quickly. Young’s solo homer in the third tied the game temporarily before Seattle’s four-run outburst in the fourth and sixth.
The most pivotal moment came in the sixth inning. After Canzone’s leadoff homer gave Seattle a one-run lead, Kirby continued to cruise. Then Young’s second homer provided a critical insurance run that put the game out of reach. The Angels had no answer for Kirby, who retired the side in order in the second, fifth and seventh innings.
The Mariners improved to 43-43, while the Angels fell to 36-50. The two teams will play again Tuesday at T-Mobile Park.
