Marlins defeat Rockies 10‑7 behind Sanoja’s triple, Conine’s homer

DENVER (Interstat) — Sandy Alcantara pitched seven solid innings and Griffin Conine hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the fifth inning Monday night, lifting the Miami Marlins to a 10-7 victory over the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.

The Marlins, who improved to 45-40, trailed 5-2 after three innings before erupting for four runs in the fifth and four more in the seventh. Alcantara, now 9-4, allowed five runs on nine hits over seven innings, striking out six and walking four. He yielded three runs in the second inning and two in the third before settling in. Colorado dropped to 33-52.

Miami’s offense collected 13 hits, including three extra-base hits in the decisive fifth. Otto Lopez led off the inning with his seventh home run of the season, a solo shot to right-center field off Rockies starter Sean Sullivan. Xavier Edwards followed with a single, and after Esteury Ruiz popped out and Heriberto Hernández flied out, Kyle Stowers walked. Conine then drove a 1-0 pitch over the right-field wall for his third homer, scoring Edwards and Stowers and giving Miami a 6-5 lead.

Colorado had taken its 5-2 advantage on the strength of a three-run second inning and a two-run third. Edouard Julien, who finished 2 for 2 with two walks, sparked the second-inning rally with a walk. Jake McCarthy doubled in two runs and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Ezequiel Tovar. In the third, Kyle Karros doubled in two runs to make it 5-2.

But Sullivan, who entered with a 4.2-inning outing, allowed five earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts and was pulled after the fifth. Victor Vodnik, the losing pitcher, took over in the sixth and gave up two earned runs on two hits over 1⅓ innings, falling to 2-3.

Miami added four more runs in the seventh against Vodnik and reliever Zach Agnos. Owen Caissie singled, Stowers doubled, and Conine walked to load the bases. Javier Sanoja then tripled to right field, clearing the bases, and scored on a single by Joe Mack to extend the lead to 10-5.

Colorado answered in the bottom of the seventh with Hunter Goodman’s 26th homer, a solo shot to left-center. The Rockies added a run in the ninth on a groundout by Mickey Moniak that scored Julien, but Miami closer Anthony Bender retired the next two batters to secure the win.

Moniak, the Rockies’ designated hitter, went 0 for 5 but drove in a run. McCarthy finished 2 for 5 with two RBIs and two doubles. Julien reached base four times. Troy Johnston went 0 for 2 with two walks. Antonio Senzatela allowed four earned runs in ⅔ of an inning.

Miami’s previous series included a sweep of St. Louis and a split with Texas, while Colorado had lost two of three at Minnesota. The Marlins now hold a 2-0 lead in the four-game series, having also won the season-opening three-game set in Miami in March.

The game drew 22,910 fans and lasted 2 hours, 58 minutes.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Miami 7, Colorado 5. The ELO system gave Miami a 63.70 percent probability to win. Miami was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5, and the total of 17 runs went under the over-under line of 11.
