Mize Dominates as Tigers Rout Yankees 7‑3
NEW YORK (Interstat) — Casey Mize pitched seven dominant innings, allowing one hit and striking out 10 as the Detroit Tigers defeated the New York Yankees 7-3 on Monday at Yankee Stadium II.
Mize, who entered with a 2-5 record and had lost his previous two starts, was in control from the first pitch. The right-hander retired the first nine batters he faced and did not allow a hit until Spencer Jones doubled with one out in the third inning. Mize stranded Jones at second by striking out Austin Wells and getting Jose Caballero to fly out.
The Tigers gave Mize an early cushion with four runs in the second inning and two more in the fourth. Detroit scored one run in the first inning on an RBI single by Spencer Torkelson.
Detroit’s offense totaled 11 hits, with Hao-Yu Lee driving in two runs on a double and a single. Kevin McGonigle had two hits and scored twice. Matt Vierling scored two runs and reached base three times.
The Yankees managed only three hits against Mize and three relievers. Amed Rosario provided all of New York’s offense with a three-run pinch-hit home run in the eighth inning. Rosario’s homer, his eighth of the season, cut Detroit’s lead to 7-3. But the Yankees could not get any closer.
Drew Anderson pitched a scoreless eighth inning for Detroit, allowing one hit but stranding a runner. Camilo Doval struck out three in a perfect ninth for the Yankees, but his team’s deficit was too large.
Ryan Weathers took the loss for New York, allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits in 1 2/3 innings. Weathers fell to 3-6.
Jake Bird, Yerry De los Santos, Tim Hill and Brent Headrick combined for 5 2/3 scoreless innings of relief for the Yankees.
The most pivotal part of the game came in the second inning. With the Tigers already leading 1-0, Zach McKinstry led off with a single and scored on a throwing error by third baseman Jose Caballero after a grounder by Matt Vierling. James Outman scored on a sacrifice fly by Dillon Dingler. After a single by Kevin McGonigle and a walk to Spencer Torkelson, Hao-Yu Lee singled to left, driving in both Vierling and McGonigle for a 5-0 lead.
Detroit added two more runs in the fourth on a two-run single by McGonigle after a single by Vierling and an error by left fielder Cody Bellinger.
Mize allowed only the double to Jones in the third and faced the minimum through six innings. He struck out the side in the sixth, fanning Austin Wells, Jose Caballero and Ben Rice. Mize threw 97 pitches, 65 for strikes.
Mize’s performance was a sharp turnaround from his previous start against the same Yankees on June 23, when he allowed four earned runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings in a loss. He also had struggled at Houston on June 17, giving up three earned runs in 4 2/3 innings. Monday night marked his longest and most effective outing of the season.
The Tigers, who had lost four of their previous five games, improved to 36-49. Detroit had dropped the first two games of its home series against the Yankees last week before winning the finale. The Tigers then lost two of three to Houston over the weekend.
New York fell to 48-36. The Yankees lost their fourth straight game, having been swept in a three-game series at Boston over the weekend. New York had taken two of three from Detroit in the previous series, winning 4-2 and 4-3 before the Tigers won 5-3.
The attendance was 40,506. The game lasted 2 hours, 41 minutes.
The teams play again Tuesday in the second game of this three-game series. Detroit travels to Texas after this series, while New York hosts Minnesota.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Detroit 4, New York 3. Interstat’s ELO system had given the Yankees a 65.60 percent probability to win. New York was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total score of 10 went under the over-under line of 8.
