White Sox rally past Orioles 8‑2 behind Gonzalez, Burke
BALTIMORE (Interstat) — The Chicago White Sox used a pair of late-inning rallies to defeat the Baltimore Orioles 8-2 on Monday night at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, snapping a two-game losing streak and improving to 44-39.
Sean Burke delivered another strong start for Chicago, allowing two runs on four hits over 5 1/3 innings while striking out eight. The right-hander, who had won his previous two outings, left with the game tied 2-2 after the Orioles pushed across a run in the third inning. Burke’s performance continued a dominant stretch: he had allowed just one earned run in each of his prior two starts, both wins.
The White Sox offense, which had managed only four runs over the previous two games, broke through in the eighth inning to seize the lead. Sam Antonacci was hit by a pitch leading off, and Colson Montgomery followed with a double to deep center field, scoring Antonacci to make it 3-2. After Kyle Teel struck out, Randal Grichuk singled to center to drive in Montgomery, extending the advantage to 4-2.
Chicago then put the game away with a four-run ninth inning. Tristan Peters and Chase Meidroth opened with back-to-back doubles, and Jacob Gonzalez singled to center to score both runners. Antonacci doubled to left-center to put runners at second and third, and after Miguel Vargas grounded out, an error by third baseman Blaze Alexander allowed two more runs to score, capping the outburst.
First baseman Jacob Gonzalez led the White Sox offense, going 2 for 4 with three RBIs, including a two-run single in the ninth. Montgomery doubled twice and drove in a run. Shortstop Chase Meidroth walked twice and doubled. Center fielder Tristan Peters singled and scored a run.
Baltimore took an early lead in the first inning. Gunnar Henderson doubled to left and scored on a sacrifice fly by Adley Rutschman. The Orioles added a run in the third when Blaze Alexander walked, moved to third on a single by Jackson Holliday, and scored on another sacrifice fly from Rutschman. Henderson finished 2 for 3 with a double and a walk.
White Sox starter Burke worked out of trouble in the early innings. He struck out the side in the second and stranded two runners in the third after the Orioles took a 2-1 lead. Burke exited after a 28-pitch fifth inning, having thrown 96 pitches overall. Reliever Grant Taylor took over and retired all six batters he faced over the sixth and seventh innings, striking out two to earn the win. Taylor improved to 4-1 on the season. Brandon Eisert struck out three in a perfect ninth.
Orioles starter Shane Baz turned in a quality start, allowing two runs on four hits over seven innings with six strikeouts. He left with the game tied 2-2 after the White Sox scored their first two runs in the third inning. Baz retired 10 of the final 11 batters he faced before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the seventh. Grant Wolfram, the losing pitcher, allowed two runs on two hits in the eighth inning without recording an out, falling to 1-2.
The White Sox had lost three of four entering the game, including a 5-4 defeat Sunday to the Kansas City Royals. The Orioles had dropped the first two games of their weekend series against the Washington Nationals before salvaging a 3-1 win Friday. Baltimore fell to 39-47 with the loss.
The game lasted 2 hours, 57 minutes in front of an announced crowd of 17,146. The victory gave Chicago a 44-39 record, while Baltimore dropped to 39-47.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Chicago White Sox 6, Baltimore Orioles 5. Interstat’s ELO system had given Baltimore a 56.20 percent probability to win. Baltimore had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 1.5. The total score of 10 went under the over-under line of 9. The two teams continue the three-game series Tuesday night at Camden Yards.
