Red Sox Rally Past Yankees in 10th Inning Walk-Off Win

BOSTON (Interstat) — The Boston Red Sox completed a four-game sweep of the New York Yankees with a 5-4 victory in 10 innings Sunday at Fenway Park, rallying for three runs in the bottom of the 10th after the Yankees had taken a two-run lead in the top half.

Attendance was 34,573, and the game lasted 3 hours, 3 minutes.

The Red Sox snapped a five-game losing streak and improved to 36-46, while the Yankees dropped to 48-35, their fourth straight loss to Boston.

New York managed only three hits in the game, but two of them came in the ninth and 10th innings as the Yankees twice erased deficits. The Red Sox collected six hits, with the decisive blow coming from Jarren Duran, who singled to center field in the bottom of the 10th to drive in Masataka Yoshida with the winning run.

Boston starter Carlos Rodón held the Red Sox hitless into the fourth inning, but a fielding error by third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera opened the door for a two-run frame. With two outs in the fourth, Cabrera’s error put runners on first and second, and Caleb Durbin lined a single to center field that scored Wilyer Abreu and Willson Contreras, giving Boston a 2-0 lead.

Rodón finished with five innings, one hit, no earned runs and six strikeouts, leaving with the Yankees trailing 2-0. Paul Blackburn tossed two scoreless innings of relief, scattering one hit with a strikeout.

The Yankees’ offense remained dormant until the ninth. Trailing 2-0, José Caballero led off with a single to left field off Red Sox reliever. Anthony Volpe walked, and Ben Rice flied out to right fielder Wilyer Abreu, but Abreu’s throwing error allowed Caballero to score from first base and Volpe to advance to third. Pinch hitter Paul Goldschmidt then reached on a fielder’s choice, scoring Volpe to tie the game 2-2. Cody Bellinger and Max Schuemann struck out to end the inning, but the Yankees had new life.

In the bottom of the ninth, Boston put the potential winning run on base when Contreras singled, but Romy Gonzalez grounded into a double play and Durbin grounded out to send the game to extra innings.

The Yankees grabbed the lead in the 10th. With Schuemann placed at second base as the automatic runner, Amed Rosario singled to right field, scoring Schuemann, and Rosario advanced to second on another throwing error by Abreu. Oswaldo Cabrera sacrificed Rosario to third, and Austin Wells reached on a fielder’s choice off Red Sox pitcher Justin Slaten, driving in Rosario for a 4-2 lead. Caballero struck out and Volpe grounded out to end the inning.

The Red Sox answered immediately in the bottom of the 10th. With Durbin as the automatic runner at second, Anthony Seigler singled to right field, scoring Durbin to cut the lead to 4-3. Andruw Monasterio ran for Seigler, and Masataka Yoshida doubled to right field, putting runners at second and third. Tsung-Che Cheng then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Monasterio to tie the game 4-4, with Yoshida advancing to third. Duran singled to center field to bring home Yoshida and end the game.

Slaten earned the victory, his first of the season against four losses. He pitched the 10th inning, allowing two runs but only one earned. Fernando Cruz took the loss for the Yankees, falling to 4-3. Cruz allowed the winning run in the 10th.

Amed Rosario led the Yankees’ offense, going 2-for-3 with a run batted in and a walk. Caballero was 1-for-4 with a run scored. The rest of the Yankees’ lineup combined for no hits: Ben Rice, Jasson Domínguez, Cody Bellinger, Spencer Jones, Oswaldo Cabrera, Austin Wells and pinch hitter Goldschmidt each went 0-for-1 or worse.

For the Red Sox, Durbin went 1-for-4 with a run and two RBIs, and Seigler was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Duran, Yoshida and Contreras each had one hit.

The game marked the fourth consecutive win for the Red Sox over the Yankees, after Boston swept a three-game series at Yankee Stadium earlier this month. The Yankees had entered the series having won two of three from Detroit and three of four from Cincinnati, but they left Fenway Park having lost four straight for the first time since mid-June.

The Red Sox, meanwhile, snapped a five-game skid that included a sweep by the Colorado Rockies and two losses to the Seattle Mariners. They return home Monday to begin a three-game series against the Washington Nationals.

The Yankees travel to Detroit for a three-game set starting Monday against the Tigers, followed by a weekend series against the Minnesota Twins at home.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Boston Red Sox 5, New York Yankees 4. Interstat’s ELO system gave the Yankees a 55.00 percent probability of winning. New York had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 1.5. The total of nine runs went under the over/under line of 7.5.
