Red Sox top Yankees 4‑1 behind Bennett, Chapman
BOSTON (Interstat) — Jake Bennett pitched 6 1/3 innings of three-hit ball and Masataka Yoshida homered as the Boston Red Sox defeated the New York Yankees 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at Fenway Park.
Bennett (2-3) allowed one earned run, struck out three and walked one in front of a crowd of 36,026. The left-hander retired the side in order in the first, second and fourth innings after his offense staked him to an early lead. Aroldis Chapman earned his 16th save with a perfect ninth inning, striking out one.
Gerrit Cole (1-3) took the loss for the Yankees, who had won four of their previous five games. Cole surrendered four runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings, striking out five and walking one.
The Red Sox jumped ahead in the first inning when Yoshida hit a solo home run to right-center field, his second of the season. Boston added a run in the second on Anthony Seigler’s first career home run, a solo shot to left field.
Boston broke the game open in the third inning. Yoshida singled and Ceddanne Rafaela followed with a single to put runners at first and second. Willson Contreras then doubled sharply to center field, driving in both runners for a 4-0 lead.
The Yankees got their only run in the fifth inning. Max Schuemann led off with a home run to center field, his first of the season. Bennett responded by retiring the next three batters, two on groundouts and one on a lineout.
New York mounted a threat in the seventh inning. Amed Rosario singled and Cody Bellinger singled to put runners at first and second with no outs. Bennett struck out Jasson Dominguez, and after a pitching change, Garrett Whitlock struck out Jose Caballero and Jazz Chisholm Jr. to end the inning.
Yankees relievers Brent Headrick, Camilo Doval and Paul Blackburn combined for 2 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out four. Headrick struck out the side in the sixth.
The Red Sox had seven hits to the Yankees’ three. Yoshida went 2 for 3 with a home run and an RBI. Seigler went 1 for 2 with a home run. Contreras drove in two runs.
The Yankees fell to 48-34, while the Red Sox improved to 35-46.
The game was the third of a four-game series at Fenway Park. Boston had won the first two games, 6-1 and 6-3, after New York had taken two of three in a series at Yankee Stadium earlier this month.
The Yankees had come into the series after taking two of three from the Detroit Tigers, and before that split a four-game set against the Cincinnati Reds. The Red Sox had dropped four of their previous six games, including a series loss in Colorado.
The teams conclude the series Sunday afternoon. The Yankees then return home to host the Detroit Tigers for three games beginning Monday, followed by a three-game set against the Minnesota Twins. The Red Sox host the Washington Nationals for three games starting Monday before traveling to Los Angeles for a three-game series against the Angels.
The Interstat game simulator projected a final score of New York 5, Boston 4. Interstat’s ELO system gave the Yankees a 57 percent probability to win. New York was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total of five runs went over the over-under line of 8.5.
