Guardians edge Mariners in back-and-forth affair

CLEVELAND (Interstat) — Slade Cecconi pitched six innings of three-hit shutout ball and Randy Arozarena’s three-run homer in the eighth inning brought Seattle within a run, but the Cleveland Guardians held on for a 4-3 victory Saturday at Progressive Field.

The game turned in the fourth and fifth innings, when Logan Gilbert’s early dominance unraveled and Cleveland seized control. Gilbert had retired the first 10 batters he faced before Travis Bazzana singled with one out in the fourth. After Brayan Rocchio lined out, Kyle Manzardo singled to put runners at the corners. Kahlil Watson then doubled to right field, scoring Bazzana and moving Manzardo to third. Cooper Ingle followed with a two-run single to right, tying the game at 3-3.

Cleveland took the lead for good in the fifth. With one out, Bazzana singled again. Rocchio doubled to left, scoring Bazzana and giving the Guardians a 4-3 edge. Gilbert struck out Manzardo to end the inning, but the damage was done.

Seattle mounted a furious rally in the eighth. Julio Rodriguez was hit by a pitch leading off against Cleveland reliever Colin Holderman. Dominic Canzone singled, putting runners at first and second. Arozarena then launched his eighth home run of the season to center field, tying the game at 4-3. Josh Naylor followed with a single, but Holderman induced a force out and then gave way to Erik Sabrowski, who struck out Colt Emerson to end the inning. Cade Smith worked a scoreless ninth for his 25th save.

Cecconi earned his fourth win against six losses, allowing three hits, no earned runs and striking out four over six innings. He walked one. The right-hander has now pitched at least six innings in three straight starts, including a loss at Houston on June 21 and a loss at Milwaukee on June 16.

Gilbert took the loss, falling to 6-5. He worked seven innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. José A. Ferrer pitched a perfect eighth for Seattle.

Seattle scored its three runs in the eighth inning. Before that, the Mariners managed only three hits off Cecconi and could not push across a run despite putting two runners on in the seventh.

Cleveland struck first in the fourth, erasing Seattle’s early lead built on a single run in the first. J.P. Crawford and Julio Rodriguez grounded out to start the game, but Canzone doubled. Arozarena flied out to end the threat.

Seattle’s bats were quiet until the eighth. Arozarena went 2 for 4 with the homer and three RBIs. Canzone had two hits, including a double. Rodriguez had two singles and was hit by a pitch. Naylor singled in the eighth.

For Cleveland, Rocchio went 1 for 4 with an RBI double. Watson had a double and an RBI. Bazzana singled twice and scored two runs. Manzardo singled. Ingle drove in two with a single.

Smith struck out one in the ninth, finishing the game in style. Holderman pitched two-thirds of an inning, Sabrowski got one out, and Hunter Gaddis threw a scoreless seventh.

The Guardians improved to 43-40, while the Mariners fell to 42-42. The teams play the series finale Sunday.

Seattle had won the opener 3-1 on Friday, snapping a modest two-game skid. The Mariners had dropped three of their previous four, including a pair of lopsided losses at Pittsburgh.

Cleveland had lost its previous game, 3-1 to Seattle, after splitting a three-game series at the Chicago White Sox.

Interstat’s game simulator projected a final score of Cleveland 5, Seattle 4. Interstat’s ELO system gave Cleveland a 52.30 percent probability to win. Seattle was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total of seven runs went under the over-under line of eight. Attendance was 33,309. The game lasted 2 hours, 38 minutes.
