Braves beat Giants 3‑1 in pitchers’ duel at Oracle Park

SAN FRANCISCO (Interstat) — The Atlanta Braves used a patchwork bullpen and timely hitting to defeat the San Francisco Giants 3-1 on Friday night at Oracle Park, snapping a three-game losing streak.

The Braves, who had been swept in three games at San Diego earlier in the week, received contributions from seven pitchers and just enough offense to hold off the Giants before a crowd of 39,051. The game lasted 2 hours, 34 minutes.

Atlanta improved to 49-31, while San Francisco dropped to 33-48. The Giants had won both meetings between the teams earlier this month in Atlanta.

San Francisco jumped ahead in the first inning. With two outs, Rafael Devers doubled to right field, scoring Casey Schmitt from first base for a 1-0 lead.

The Braves answered in the second. Austin Riley singled with one out, and Dominic Smith followed with a single to center that brought Riley home, tying the game.

Atlanta took the lead in the third. Michael Harris II singled and advanced to second on a throwing error by Giants second baseman Luis Arraez after Mauricio Dubón grounded into a force out. After a groundout moved Dubón to third, Ozzie Albies singled to center, scoring Dubón for a 2-1 advantage.

The Braves added an insurance run in the fifth. Dubón singled and Matt Olson doubled, putting runners on second and third. Albies then lifted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Dubón to make it 3-1.

The Giants posed their greatest threat in the seventh inning. Drew Cavanaugh walked and Victor Bericoto singled off reliever Hurston Waldrep, putting runners on first and second with no outs. Waldrep was replaced by Dylan Lee, who induced a sacrifice bunt from Arraez that advanced both runners. With one out and runners on second and third, Lee got Bryce Eldridge to pop out to second baseman Ozzie Albies and then retired Casey Schmitt on a flyout to right field to end the inning.

Lee pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out one. He earned the win, improving to 4-0. Raisel Iglesias pitched a perfect ninth, striking out one, to record his 16th save.

Reynaldo López started for Atlanta and worked three innings, allowing four hits and one run with one strikeout. Hurston Waldrep followed with two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out three. Dylan Dodd pitched a perfect inning and Didier Fuentes recorded the final out of the sixth inning, striking out the only batter he faced.

Giants starter Trevor McDonald took the loss, falling to 2-6. He allowed three runs, all earned, on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings. He struck out three and walked two.

Offensively, Matt Olson had two hits in four at-bats for Atlanta. Albies drove in two runs, one on a single and one on a sacrifice fly. Smith drove in the other run.

For San Francisco, Devers doubled and drove in a run. Willy Adames and Drew Cavanaugh each had two hits. The Giants left seven runners on base.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of San Francisco Giants 5, Atlanta Braves 3. Interstat’s ELO system gave Atlanta a 56.30 percent probability to win. Atlanta was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total of four runs went under the over-under line of 7.5.
