White Sox pummel Royals 22‑1 behind three multi-homer sluggers
CHICAGO (Interstat) — The Chicago White Sox erupted for 10 runs in the third inning and never looked back, hammering the Kansas City Royals 22-1 on Friday night at Guaranteed Rate Field.
First baseman Jacob Gonzalez went 3 for 4 with a home run and five RBIs, third baseman Miguel Vargas also drove in five runs on a 3-for-6 night that included a homer, and center fielder Tristan Peters had a grand slam and six RBIs as Chicago pounded out 23 hits. The White Sox improved to 42-38, while the Royals fell to 34-49.
Kansas City took a brief 1-0 lead in the top of the first when catcher Carter Jensen singled sharply to right field off White Sox starter David Sandlin. But the Royals managed only three more hits the rest of the night and never scored again after the first inning.
The game turned decisively in the bottom of the third. After a popout by Peters, Gonzalez walked and Sam Antonacci singled, putting runners on the corners. Vargas then crushed an 0-1 pitch to left field for a three-run homer, his 18th of the season, giving Chicago a 3-1 lead. The White Sox kept the line moving. Kyle Teel walked, Andrew Benintendi doubled, and after a strikeout, Chase Meidroth singled in a run. A walk to Braden Montgomery loaded the bases, and Peters singled to drive in two more runs, making it 6-1. Gonzalez followed with a three-run homer to right, his second of the year. Antonacci singled and Vargas doubled in another run, pushing the lead to 10-1 before the inning finally ended.
The White Sox added a run in the fourth on Benintendi’s solo homer to right, his 10th. In the fifth, Teel hit a two-run homer to right center, extending the margin to 13-1. Chicago broke the game wide open in the sixth. With the bases loaded after a single, another single and an error, Peters launched a grand slam to right center, his fourth home run of the season, making it 17-1. The White Sox tacked on five more in the seventh, highlighted by Gonzalez’s RBI single, a run-scoring force out from Vargas and a Teel single that brought home another run.
Royals starter Mitch Spence took the loss, allowing 10 earned runs on nine hits and three walks over 2 1/3 innings. He struck out four but could not escape the third-inning barrage. Sandlin earned the win, yielding one earned run on three hits over six innings with six strikeouts and two walks. He improved to 2-1. Steven Cruz threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings for Kansas City with three strikeouts. Trevor Richards and Brandon Eisert each pitched a scoreless inning of relief for Chicago.
Kansas City’s only run came in the top of the fourth on a double-play grounder by Michael Massey that scored Bobby Witt Jr. from third. The Royals managed just four hits in the game: Jensen’s first-inning single, a Josh Rojas single in the fifth, a Jac Caglianone triple in the sixth and an Isaac Collins double in the eighth. Chicago’s Chase Meidroth collected four hits and drove in two runs from the second base and third base positions.
The game lasted 2 hours, 54 minutes. The White Sox had lost the previous two meetings in this season series but had won six of the seven head-to-head matchups before Friday. Chicago’s previous two games were a loss and a win against Cleveland, while Kansas City had lost five of its last six entering the contest.
