Twins edge Rockies 9‑8 in 10 innings at Target Field
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (Interstat) — The Minnesota Twins rallied from a three-run deficit in the ninth inning and won 9-8 in 10 innings Friday night at Target Field in front of 27,317 fans, completing a wild comeback that saw the Colorado Rockies take their first lead in the top of the ninth only to see it erased minutes later.
The game lasted 2 hours, 58 minutes. Minnesota improved to 39-44, while Colorado dropped to 32-50.
The Twins built a 7-0 lead through five innings behind a strong start from right-hander Taj Bradley, who worked seven innings, allowing three hits and two earned runs while striking out seven. Bradley surrendered only a pair of singles and a walk through the first seven frames, departing with a seven-run cushion. Colorado pitchers struggled early, issuing walks and giving up extra-base hits that put the Rockies in a deep hole.
Minnesota struck first in the bottom of the first. Byron Buxton singled, and Kody Clemens followed with a two-run homer to right field, his 12th of the season, scoring Buxton and giving the Twins a 2-0 lead. In the second, Royce Lewis singled, and Brooks Lee belted a two-run homer to right, his 14th, making it 4-0.
The Twins added three more in the fifth. Trevor Larnach doubled, Buxton doubled him home, and after a walk to Clemens, Josh Bell doubled to left, driving in Buxton and Clemens to extend the lead to 7-0.
Colorado did not get on the board until the eighth inning. Ezequiel Tovar doubled, Edouard Julien walked, and Jake McCarthy singled to load the bases. Mickey Moniak grounded out, scoring Tovar. Hunter Goodman then lifted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Julien. TJ Rumfield singled to center, plating McCarthy, and Willi Castro singled to put runners at first and second. But Tyler Freeman struck out to end the inning, leaving the Rockies trailing 7-3.
The Rockies then erupted for five runs in the ninth. Cole Carrigg walked, Tovar flied out, but Julien doubled to center, scoring Carrigg. McCarthy then hit a two-run homer to right-center, his sixth, bringing home Julien and tying the game at 7-7. Kyle Karros doubled, and Hunter Goodman followed with his 22nd homer of the season, a two-run shot to left, giving Colorado an 8-7 lead. TJ Rumfield doubled, but the rally stalled when Castro grounded out and Freeman bunted out.
Minnesota answered in the bottom of the ninth. With one out, Austin Martin singled, Ryan Kreidler singled, and Buxton singled to left, scoring Martin and sending Kreidler to second. Cullen, the tying run, moved up on the play, but Clemens flew out and Bell flew out, stranding Kreidler at second and sending the game to extra innings tied at 8-8.
In the top of the 10th, Colorado’s extra-inning runner Tyler Freeman advanced to third on a groundout by Carrigg. Tovar then grounded into a fielder’s choice, and Freeman was thrown out at home by shortstop Kreidler. Julien grounded out to first, ending the threat.
In the bottom of the 10th, Rockies reliever Jimmy Herget, who took the loss, intentionally walked Victor Caratini to load the bases after Kyler Fedko began the inning as the automatic runner at second. Royce Lewis then singled to center, scoring Fedko and giving the Twins a walk-off victory.
Key performances for Minnesota included Buxton, who went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a double. Clemens homered and drove in two, Lee hit a two-run homer, and Bell had two RBIs on a double. Bradley’s seven-inning outing was the longest by a Twins starter in the series. For Colorado, McCarthy was 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs. Goodman drove in three runs, including the go-ahead homer in the ninth. Tovar doubled and scored twice.
Colorado relievers John Brebbia and Juan Mejia each tossed a scoreless inning in relief, while Seth Halvorsen recorded a hitless seventh. Herget took the loss, falling to 0-2. Minnesota’s Andrew Morris earned the win, his third against two losses, after pitching a scoreless 10th inning.
The Twins outhit the Rockies 14-11. Colorado pitchers combined for 20 strikes, 49 balls and 20 balls in play. Minnesota pitchers combined for 10 strikes, 48 balls and 10 balls in play.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Minnesota, which had dropped consecutive games to the Los Angeles Dodgers earlier in the week. Colorado had won three of its previous four games, including a series win over Boston.
The teams meet again Saturday and Sunday at Target Field. Minnesota then travels to Houston for three games before a four-game set in New York against the Yankees. Colorado continues its road trip with a four-game home stand against Miami starting Monday.
Interstat’s game simulator projected a final score of Minnesota 6, Colorado 5. Interstat’s ELO system gave Minnesota a 63.60 percent probability to win. The Twins entered as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total score of 17 went under the over/under line of 8.5.
