SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — The San Diego Padres rallied from a two-run deficit with a four-run sixth inning Wednesday night to defeat the Atlanta Braves 5-2 at PETCO Park, winning the three-game series in front of 40,183 fans.

JP Sears earned the win in relief for San Diego, improving to 1-0 this season. Jason Adam recorded his second save of the season. Martín Pérez took the loss for Atlanta, falling to 6-4.

The game was scoreless through the first two innings before the Padres struck first in the third. Ty France led off the bottom of the third with a solo home run to left field, his ninth of the season, giving San Diego a 1-0 lead.

Atlanta answered in the top of the sixth, erasing a two-run deficit with a single swing. With one out, Austin Riley walked. After Eli White struck out, Joey Bart launched a two-run homer to left field, scoring Riley and giving the Braves a 2-1 lead.

The Braves’ lead lasted only half an inning. In the bottom of the sixth, San Diego erupted for three runs to take control.

Ty France started the rally with a leadoff double to left, his seventh of the season. Freddy Fermin sacrificed him to third. Jase Bowen walked, and Fernando Tatis Jr. struck out for the second out.

With two outs, Samad Taylor delivered the decisive blow, a soft line-drive single to right field that scored France and Bowen, putting the Padres ahead 3-2. Taylor was then caught stealing second base to end the inning, but the damage was done.

San Diego had also scored a run in the fourth to take a 1-0 lead and another in the fifth to tie the game at 2-2. In the fourth, Manny Machado walked, moved to second on a Xander Bogaerts single, and scored on a sacrifice fly by France. In the fifth, Fernando Tatis Jr. walked, moved to second on a bunt single by Samad Taylor, and scored on a Bogaerts single to center, knotting the game at 2-2.

The Braves put two runners on base in the fourth when Ozzie Albies singled, Matt Olson struck out, Riley walked, and Eli White reached on a fielder’s choice, loading the bases with two outs. But Jorge Mateo flew out to center to end the threat.

Atlanta’s best chance to extend the lead in the sixth came after Bart’s homer, but Drake Baldwin struck out to end the inning.

San Diego added an insurance run in the seventh when Machado walked, Bogaerts reached on a force out, Jackson Merrill reached on a fielder’s choice and an error by first baseman Matt Olson, and Miguel Andujar grounded into a double play to end the inning with no further scoring.

The Braves got two hits in the eighth, with Olson singling and Riley grounding out to move Olson to second, but Eli White grounded out to end the inning.

In the ninth, the Braves went down in order, with Bart grounding out, Baldwin popping out and Dominic Smith grounding out to end the game.

Atlanta’s Joey Bart, who entered the game with two home runs on the season, now has three. His two-run blast in the sixth briefly gave the Braves their first lead of the night.

San Diego’s Samad Taylor, who entered the game with 10 runs batted in this season, drove in two in the sixth to turn the tide.

The series sweep was not achieved, as the Padres won two of three. Atlanta took the first game of the series on Monday, 1-0, before San Diego won Tuesday’s extra-inning thriller 7-6 in 10 innings.

The Braves’ record against the Padres this season now stands at 1-2.

For Atlanta, the loss snapped a two-game winning streak in the series. The Braves are scheduled to travel to San Francisco to face the Giants on Friday.

San Diego will host the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday to begin a three-game series.

The most important stretch of the game was the bottom of the sixth inning, when the Padres erased a one-run deficit and took the lead for good. With two outs and a runner on third, Samad Taylor’s two-run single turned a 2-1 Braves lead into a 3-2 Padres advantage. The hit came immediately after the Braves had taken their first lead of the game on Bart’s homer, and it flipped the momentum decisively in San Diego’s favor. The Padres added a second run on the same hit, providing a cushion that allowed their bullpen to close out the victory.

Interstat’s game simulator projected a final score of San Diego Padres 5, Atlanta Braves 3. Interstat’s ELO system gave Atlanta a 51 percent probability to win. The Braves were installed as pregame favorites with a spread of minus 1.5. The total score of seven went over the over/under line of 7.5.
