Boston Red Sox at Colorado Rockies

AP Sports Preview

DENVER (Interstat) — The Boston Red Sox and Colorado Rockies conclude their three-game series Wednesday afternoon at Coors Field, with both teams looking to gain momentum in a season defined by struggles.

Boston (31-45) will start left-hander Ranger Suarez (3-3, 4.12 ERA), who seeks his first win since June 10. The Red Sox dropped the series opener Monday 3-2 before rebounding with a 1-0 victory Tuesday.

Colorado (31-48) counters with lefty Kyle Freeland (1-7, 6.35 ERA), who has lost four consecutive decisions. The Rockies have lost seven of their last 10 games.

The series is tied 1-1 heading into the finale. Monday’s game featured stellar pitching from both sides: Boston’s Jake Bennett tossed six scoreless innings with nine strikeouts in a losing effort, while Colorado’s Ryan Feltner allowed two runs over six innings to earn the win.

Bennett, a 24-year-old right-hander, has been a bright spot for Boston. Over his last three starts, he owns a 1.80 ERA with 18 strikeouts in 16 1/3 innings, though the Red Sox lost all three games. Feltner, meanwhile, has been inconsistent but dominant at times: he has two wins in his last five starts, including a six-inning, two-run outing against Boston on Monday.

The forecast calls for partly cloudy skies with temperatures around 79 degrees at first pitch, typical for a late-June afternoon at Coors Field.

The betting line favors Boston by 1.5 runs, while the over/under is set at 11.5, reflecting the high-scoring reputation of Coors Field. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-3 Rockies victory.

Both teams are well out of playoff contention but are evaluating young talent for the future. Boston will return home to host the New York Yankees for a four-game series starting Thursday, while Colorado travels to Minnesota for a three-game set against the Twins on Friday.
