Guardians outlast White Sox in 10 innings

CHICAGO (Interstat) — Kahlil Watson drove in three runs and Tanner Bibee pitched six scoreless innings as the Cleveland Guardians defeated the Chicago White Sox 4-3 in 10 innings Wednesday afternoon at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Watson, the Guardians’ right fielder, delivered a two-run single in the sixth inning and added the go-ahead RBI single in the 10th. His three RBIs accounted for all but one of Cleveland’s runs as the Guardians salvaged the finale of a three-game series after dropping the first two contests by scores of 2-1 and 6-5.

Bibee scattered three hits over six innings, striking out three without allowing a run. He did not factor in the decision, but his outing kept the game scoreless into the late innings. In his previous start, Bibee allowed three earned runs in 5 1/3 innings in a loss at Houston.

Cleveland improved to 42-39, while Chicago fell to 41-38. The Guardians climbed back to within one game of the White Sox in the American League Central standings.

The game remained scoreless through five innings as both starters worked efficiently. Chicago’s Erick Fedde allowed five hits and one earned run over four innings, striking out two. Cleveland’s Bibee retired the side in order in the first and fourth innings and worked out of a two-on, one-out jam in the third.

The Guardians broke through in the sixth inning against Fedde. Brayan Rocchio led off with a single and advanced to second when David Fry reached on a fielder’s choice that also became an error by shortstop Colson Montgomery. After Kyle Manzardo walked to load the bases, Rhys Hoskins struck out. Watson then lined a single to left field that scored Rocchio and pinch runner Petey Halpin, with Watson taking second on a throwing error by left fielder Sam Antonacci. The inning ended with a pair of strikeouts, but Cleveland held a 2-0 lead.

Chicago trimmed the deficit in the seventh. Kyle Teel singled and Montgomery doubled, putting runners at second and third with no outs. After Chase Meidroth struck out, Braden Montgomery lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Teel and making it 2-1.

Cleveland answered in the eighth against reliever Joe Rock. Halpin led off with a bunt single and Manzardo walked. After Hoskins struck out, Watson flew out to center, advancing Halpin to third. Daniel Schneemann walked to load the bases, and Patrick Bailey also walked to force in Halpin, extending the Guardians’ lead to 3-1. Steven Kwan struck out to end the inning.

The White Sox mounted a dramatic comeback in the ninth against Cleveland’s bullpen. With one out, Braden Montgomery, who had moved from right field to center field earlier in the game, homered to center field for his second home run of the season. Randal Grichuk then followed with a home run to left-center, his ninth, tying the game 3-3. Jacob Gonzalez followed with a single and Sam Antonacci walked, bringing the potential winning run to second base. But Miguel Vargas flied out to center, sending the game to extra innings.

In the top of the 10th, the Guardians pushed across the decisive run. With Halpin placed at second as the automatic runner, Manzardo struck out. Hoskins singled to left, moving Halpin to third. Watson then singled to left, scoring Halpin and giving Cleveland a 4-3 lead. Schneemann grounded into a force out, and Bailey grounded into another force out to end the inning.

The White Sox had one last chance in the bottom of the 10th. Vargas started as the automatic runner at second. Luisangel Acuña sacrificed him to third. Kyle Teel walked and Colson Montgomery walked to load the bases with one out. Meidroth grounded into a force out at home, with shortstop Brayan Rocchio throwing to catcher Patrick Bailey to cut down Vargas. Braden Montgomery then grounded out to first baseman Kyle Manzardo to end the game.

Shawn Armstrong earned the victory for Cleveland, pitching 1 1/3 scoreless innings. He allowed no hits and improved to 2-1. Grant Taylor took the loss for Chicago, also falling to 2-1. Taylor allowed one run in one inning of work.

Cleveland’s bullpen combined for four scoreless innings, including scoreless outings from Tim Herrin and Colin Holderman. For Chicago, relievers Brandon Eisert and Chris Murphy each tossed scoreless frames. Eisert pitched 1 2/3 innings with three strikeouts, while Murphy worked 1 1/3 innings with two strikeouts.

The Guardians finished with eight hits, while the White Sox collected 10. Both teams left numerous runners on base, but Cleveland capitalized on its opportunities in the extra frame.

The series continues next week when the White Sox travel to Cleveland for a four-game set beginning July 2. Before that, the Guardians host Seattle for three games starting Friday, and the White Sox host Kansas City for three games beginning Friday.
