Marlins Rally Past Rangers, 4‑2, Behind Lopez Homer
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (Interstat) — Otto Lopez’s two-run homer in the eighth inning broke a tie and lifted the Miami Marlins to a 4-2 victory over the Texas Rangers on Wednesday afternoon at loanDepot Park.
The win gave Miami a split of the three-game series after Texas won the opener 4-3 Monday and the Marlins took Tuesday’s contest 6-4. The Marlins improved to 42-39, while the Rangers fell to 38-42.
Texas struck first in the fourth inning when Wyatt Langford led off with a solo home run to center field, his seventh of the season. Miami answered in the bottom half as Griffin Conine doubled to right field, scoring Otto Lopez, who had walked.
The Marlins tied the game in the fifth. Owen Caissie singled and Leo Jiménez walked. After a sacrifice bunt by Brian Navarreto moved both runners into scoring position, Xavier Edwards singled to right, scoring Caissie and sending Jiménez to third. Otto Lopez grounded into a double play to end the inning but the damage was done.
The score remained 2-2 through the middle innings as both starting pitchers settled in. Texas’ Jacob deGrom worked six innings, allowing two runs on four hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Miami’s Eury Pérez went four and two-thirds innings, yielding one run on three hits with one strikeout and one walk.
The decisive moment came in the eighth. With one out, Navarreto drew a walk. Xavier Edwards lined out to second baseman Justin Foscue for the second out. Lopez then delivered his sixth homer of the season, driving a pitch to left-center field to put Miami ahead 4-2. Kyle Stowers followed with a triple but was left stranded.
Texas mounted one last threat in the ninth. Joc Pederson led off with a solo homer to center, his 11th, cutting the Marlins’ lead to 4-3. But Miami closer Pete Fairbanks retired the next three batters — Wyatt Langford on a popout, Josh Jung on a lineout and Brandon Nimmo on a flyout — to earn his 12th save.
John King earned the win for Miami, pitching a scoreless seventh inning, allowing one hit and striking out one. He improved to 5-1. DeGrom took the loss, falling to 6-5.
Michael Petersen struck out three in a perfect eighth inning for Miami. Fairbanks allowed one earned run on one hit in the ninth.
The Rangers totaled six hits, including Langford’s homer, Pederson’s homer and singles from Jake Burger, Nicky Lopez, Alejandro Osuna and Langford again. The Marlins also had six hits, with Lopez’s homer, Conine’s double, Stowers’ triple and singles from Edwards, Caissie and Otto Lopez earlier.
Defensive plays of note included a pickoff by catcher Brian Navarreto in the second inning that caught Ezequiel Duran at first base, and a double play turned by Texas in the fifth.
The game drew an announced attendance of 13,710 and lasted 2 hours, 27 minutes.
