Dansby Swanson’s 4 RBIs power Chicago Cubs past Mets 10‑5

NEW YORK (Interstat) — Dansby Swanson drove in four runs with a triple and two singles, and the Chicago Cubs defeated the New York Mets 10-5 on Wednesday at Citi Field to win their second straight game in the series.

The Cubs improved to 42-37, while the Mets dropped to 34-45.

Shota Imanaga earned the win, allowing four runs on four hits over 5 1/3 innings with four strikeouts and three walks. The left-hander improved to 5-6. Brooks Raley took the loss, giving up three runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning of relief. Raley fell to 2-2.

Chicago outhit New York 11-8, taking advantage of four Mets errors that led to four unearned runs.

The Cubs struck first in the second inning. Nico Hoerner led off with a double and scored on a double by Carson Kelly. Kelly moved to third on a flyout but was stranded as Swanson and Pete Crow-Armstrong struck out.

New York answered in the bottom of the frame. Francisco Alvarez hit a solo home run to left-center field, his eighth of the season. Eric Wagaman singled, and A.J. Ewing followed with a two-run homer to right-center, his third, giving the Mets a 3-1 lead.

Chicago regained the lead with a three-run fourth. Hoerner doubled again, and Kelly reached on a throwing error by second baseman Marcus Semien, putting runners on second and third. Pedro Ramirez singled home Hoerner, and Swanson singled to score Kelly. Crow-Armstrong then bunted for a single, driving in Ramirez for a 4-3 lead. The Cubs left the bases loaded when Matt Shaw, Seiya Suzuki and Alex Bregman struck out.

Mark Vientos tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run to left-center, his 10th, making it 4-4.

The Cubs went back ahead with two runs in the sixth. Ramirez doubled to right, and Swanson tripled to center to bring him home. After Crow-Armstrong walked, Shaw grounded into a forceout that scored Swanson for a 6-4 lead.

Bo Bichette cut the lead to 6-5 in the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer to left-center, his 10th. The Mets had a chance to tie later in the inning, but Marcus Semien singled, and Alvarez struck out to end the threat.

Chicago added an insurance run in the eighth. Ramirez reached on a fielding error by third baseman Bo Bichette, moved to second on a lineout, and scored on a throwing error by first baseman Mark Vientos after Crow-Armstrong reached on a bunt, making it 7-5.

The Cubs broke the game open with three runs in the ninth. Hoerner doubled for the third time, and Kelly reached on another error by Vientos. Ramirez singled home Hoerner, and Swanson lined a two-run single to left field, extending the lead to 10-5. Crow-Armstrong popped out to end the inning.

Hoerner finished with three hits, all doubles, and scored three runs. Ramirez also had three hits and drove in two runs. Swanson, who went 3-for-5 with four RBIs, has driven in eight runs over his last two games after a 2-for-3, four-RBI performance in Tuesday’s 9-6 win at New York.

For the Mets, Ewing had two hits, including a home run and a double, and drove in two runs. Bichette homered and singled. Huascar Brazoban pitched two perfect innings of relief with four strikeouts, and relievers A.J. Minter and Luke Weaver each worked a scoreless inning.

The Mets’ bullpen otherwise struggled. Raley, who entered in the fourth after starter Tylor Megill left with an apparent injury, gave up three runs on three hits. Megill worked three innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits with six strikeouts.

Chicago’s bullpen combined for 3 2/3 scoreless innings. Hunter Bigge, Adbert Alzolay, Julian Merryweather and Porter Hodge each worked a hitless frame. The Cubs pitching staff recorded 15 strikeouts, 67 balls and 15 balls in play. New York pitchers recorded 15 strikeouts, 41 balls and 15 balls in play.

The Cubs capitalized on Mets defensive miscues. New York committed four errors, the most in a game for the team this season. Two errors in the ninth inning allowed the Cubs to extend their lead.

The game took 3 hours to play before an announced crowd of 33,934 at Citi Field. The teams wrap up their three-game series Thursday.

Chicago now heads to Milwaukee for a weekend series against the Brewers, while New York returns home to face the Philadelphia Phillies.
