Angels top Orioles 5‑1 behind Johnson’s dominant start

ANAHEIM, Calif. (Interstat) — Ryan Johnson pitched six innings of one-hit ball and Nolan Schanuel homered as the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Baltimore Orioles 5-1 on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at Angel Stadium of Anaheim.

The Angels, who lost the series opener to Baltimore 6-1 a night earlier, evened the two-game set behind a dominant performance from Johnson. The right-hander struck out eight, walked none and allowed only a sharp line-drive single to Jeremiah Jackson in the sixth inning. Johnson improved to 1-2 on the season after allowing five earned runs in five innings in his previous start against the Athletics on June 18.

Shane Baz took the loss for Baltimore, falling to 4-8. The Orioles right-hander allowed five runs on eight hits over five innings while striking out five.

The Angels struck first in the bottom of the first inning. Zach Neto led off with a single to center field. After Vaughn Grissom flied out, Schanuel crushed a 1-1 pitch to right‑center field for his sixth home run of the season, scoring Neto and giving Los Angeles a 2-0 lead.

Baltimore did not get a hit until the sixth inning. Johnson retired the first 12 batters he faced, mixing a four-seam fastball that touched 96 mph with a sharp slider. The Orioles’ first baserunner came on a walk to Tyler O’Neill in the third inning, but Johnson struck out Jeremiah Jackson and Taylor Ward to end the threat.

The Angels broke the game open in the fifth inning. After Jose Siri reached on an infield single, Neto doubled to left field, putting runners at second and third. Grissom then singled to left, driving in both Siri and Neto to make it 4-0. Schanuel followed with a single to right, moving Grissom to third, and Jorge Soler lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Grissom, extending the lead to 5-0.

Johnson exited after six innings having thrown 88 pitches, 62 for strikes. He allowed one hit, walked none and struck out eight. The only hit he allowed was Jackson’s one‑out single in the sixth, which was immediately erased when Taylor Ward grounded into a double play.

Baltimore finally scored in the seventh inning off reliever Samy Natera Jr. Gunnar Henderson led off with a single. Pete Alonso walked, and after a forceout, Henderson advanced to third. Leody Taveras then lined a single to center field, scoring Henderson. The rally ended when Colton Cowser flied out to right.

The Orioles mustered only three hits in the game. Johnson’s performance was backed by a bullpen that allowed one hit over the final three innings. Ryan Zeferjahn struck out three in a perfect seventh. Chase Silseth worked a third of an inning, allowing a hit but striking out one. Sam Bachman closed the ninth with a perfect inning, striking out one.

Albert Suárez pitched three scoreless innings of relief for Baltimore, allowing no hits and striking out three. He entered after Baz exited and retired all nine batters he faced.

Zach Neto had two hits for the Angels, including a double. Vaughn Grissom drove in two runs with his fifth‑inning single. Nolan Schanuel finished 2‑for‑4 with a homer and two RBIs.

The attendance was 31,569. The game lasted 2 hours, 22 minutes.

The Orioles fell to 38-43 on the season. The Angels improved to 33-48.
