Yankees Edge Tigers 4‑3 Behind Rodón, Chisholm Homer
DETROIT (Interstat) — Carlos Rodón allowed three runs over 5 1/3 innings and Jazz Chisholm Jr. drove in two runs with a home run, lifting the New York Yankees to a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at Comerica Park.
Rodón, who entered with a 3-2 record, scattered six hits and struck out five while walking two. He left with a one-run lead in the sixth inning after the Tigers scratched a run across on back-to-back doubles. David Bednar recorded the final four outs for his 15th save of the season, working 1 1/3 hitless innings with no walks. Casey Mize took the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings, striking out six.
The Yankees improved to 47-31, while the Tigers fell to 34-45. The game drew 27,157 fans and lasted 2 hours, 51 minutes.
The decisive moment came in the top of the sixth inning with the score tied 1-1. Mize had retired Cody Bellinger to start the frame but then gave up a soft single to Paul Goldschmidt on a ground ball to the mound. Chisholm followed by launching a 1-1 pitch over the right-center-field wall for his 12th home run, scoring Goldschmidt ahead of him and putting the Yankees ahead 3-1.
The rally continued after Spencer Jones struck out. José Caballero singled to left, and Austin Wells doubled off the left-field wall, plating Caballero to make it 4-1. Mize struck out Anthony Volpe to end the inning, but the damage had been done.
Detroit answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning. Dillon Dingler led off with a double to center field, his 15th of the season. Matt Vierling followed with a double to left, scoring Dingler and cutting the deficit to 4-2. A strikeout of Riley Greene and a strikeout of Spencer Torkelson followed, then Rodón walked Kerry Carpenter. Rodón was lifted at that point, having thrown 91 pitches, and Brent Headrick entered. Headrick induced a groundout from Colt Keith to end the inning, stranding Carpenter at first and preserving the 4-3 lead.
From there, the Tigers could not mount another threat. Headrick worked 1 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out one. Fernando Cruz retired the only batter he faced in the eighth on a strikeout. Bednar took over in the eighth with one out and got Matt Vierling to strike out, then retired Riley Greene on a lineout and Torkelson on a popout. In the ninth, Bednar set down Kerry Carpenter on a flyout, Colt Keith on a groundout and Zach McKinstry on a flyout to left to seal the victory.
The Yankees had struck first in the fourth inning. After Paul Goldschmidt flew out, Chisholm singled and Spencer Jones singled, putting runners at the corners. José Caballero grounded out to third, scoring Chisholm and giving New York a 1-0 lead. Mize escaped further damage when Austin Wells grounded out to the mound.
Detroit answered in the bottom of the third. With one out, Zach McKinstry singled and Ben Malgeri singled, advancing McKinstry to third. Kevin McGonigle popped out, but Dingler singled to left, scoring Malgeri and tying the game 1-1. Matt Vierling popped out to end the inning.
The Tigers had a chance to add more in the fourth. Riley Greene walked leading off, but Torkelson struck out. Jahmai Jones grounded out, moving Greene to second. Hao-Yu Lee then singled to left, and Greene attempted to score, but left fielder Cody Bellinger threw a strike to catcher Austin Wells, who applied the tag to end the inning.
Neither team scored again until the pivotal sixth.
Key offensive performances for the Yankees included Chisholm, who went 2-for-4 with the home run and two RBIs. Volpe and Caballero each had two hits, and Wells doubled and drove in a run. For Detroit, Dingler led the way with a 3-for-4 day, including a double and an RBI. Vierling also doubled and drove in a run.
In relief, New York’s bullpen combined for 3 2/3 scoreless innings, with Headrick, Cruz and Bednar allowing only two hits and striking out two. Detroit’s bullpen was equally effective, with Kyle Finnegan striking out four in 1 1/3 hitless innings, Tyler Holton striking out two in a scoreless inning and Enmanuel De Jesus striking out one in a scoreless frame. However, the Yankees had already built their lead against Mize.
The win ended a two-game skid for the Yankees, who had lost the previous night 5-3 to the Tigers and had dropped three of four overall. The Tigers, coming off a 5-3 win in the series opener, had won two straight before Tuesday.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of New York Yankees 6, Detroit Tigers 4. Interstat’s ELO system gave the Yankees a 59.90 percent probability of winning. New York entered as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The combined total of seven runs went over the over/under line of 7.5.
