Bradish dominates as Orioles top Angels 6‑1
ANAHEIM, Calif. (Interstat) — Kyle Bradish pitched eight dominant innings, and Coby Mayo’s three-run homer highlighted a four-run fourth as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Los Angeles Angels 6-1 on Monday night at Angel Stadium of Anaheim.
Bradish, who improved to 5-7, allowed six hits and no earned runs while striking out nine. He did not walk a batter and faced only one serious jam, escaping a first-inning threat with two singles and a strikeout. The right-hander retired 14 of the final 16 Angels he faced, allowing only two singles over the final six frames.
Baltimore broke the game open in the fourth. Gunnar Henderson led off with a walk, and Pete Alonso followed with a single. Mayo then drove a 1-2 pitch from Angels starter Sam Aldegheri over the left-field fence for his 10th home run, giving the Orioles a 4-0 lead. Aldegheri, who took the loss to fall to 2-3, allowed five earned runs on five hits over 4 2/3 innings, walking one and striking out three.
The Orioles had already taken a 1-0 lead in the first when Taylor Ward led off the game with a home run to center field, his fifth of the season. Baltimore added a run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Alonso, scoring Jeremiah Jackson, who had singled and advanced on a fielder’s choice. Another run came in the seventh when Henderson tripled to right field, scoring Ward.
Henderson finished with three hits and an RBI, while Ward went 2-for-5 with a home run and a run scored. Mayo was 1-for-4 with the home run and three RBIs.
The Angels mustered their only run in the ninth inning when Jorge Soler led off with a home run to left field, his 10th, off Baltimore reliever Rico Garcia. Garcia allowed one earned run on one hit with one strikeout in his inning of work.
Los Angeles had chances early but could not convert. In the first, Nolan Schanuel singled and Jo Adell singled, but Bradish struck out Soler and retired Wade Meckler on a groundout. The Angels also put a runner on second in the sixth after a Zach Neto single and a groundout, but Bradish induced a popout and a strikeout.
Bradish’s outing was his second consecutive strong start, following a win at Seattle on June 17 in which he allowed one earned run over 7 2/3 innings. He had struggled in his previous start June 11, allowing five earned runs in four innings against Seattle.
For the Angels, reliever Jose Fermin threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out three. Brent Suter worked two innings, giving up three hits and one earned run while striking out three. Kirby Yates struck out three in a scoreless ninth.
The Orioles finished with 11 hits, including two from Henderson, two from Ward, and one each from Alonso, Mayo, Tyler O’Neill, Leody Taveras, Jeremiah Jackson and Sam Huff. The Angels had seven hits, with Schanuel, Adell, Meckler, Neto, Donovan Walton, Soler and Denzer Guzman each getting one.
Baltimore improved to 38-42, while Los Angeles dropped to 32-48.
The Orioles are back at Angel Stadium on Tuesday for the second game of the series, and will also play Wednesday before returning home to face the Washington Nationals in a three-game set starting Friday. The Angels continue their homestand Tuesday and Wednesday against Baltimore, then host the Athletics beginning Friday.
