Eric Lauer’s six hitless innings lead Dodgers past Twins 2‑1

MINNEAPOLIS (Interstat) — Eric Lauer pitched six innings of no-hit baseball and Freddie Freeman broke a 1-1 tie with a sixth-inning home run, lifting the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 2-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Monday night at Target Field.

The Dodgers, who improved to 50-29, won for the sixth time in their past 10 games after dropping a lopsided 12-1 decision to Baltimore on Sunday. The Twins fell to 38-42 despite a strong outing from right-hander Zebby Matthews.

Lauer, who entered the game with a 2-5 record and a 4.50 ERA, was sharp from the outset. He struck out two, walked three and allowed no hits over six scoreless innings, retiring the side in order in the second, third and fifth innings. The only blemish on his night was a leadoff walk to Josh Bell in the fourth, but Lauer induced a flyout, a strikeout and a forceout to escape unscathed. His performance was a sharp rebound from his previous start June 15, when he gave up three earned runs on six hits over six innings in a win over Tampa Bay.

The Dodgers struck first in the opening inning. Shohei Ohtani launched a solo home run to right field, his 17th of the season, giving Los Angeles a 1-0 lead. The Twins answered immediately in the bottom half. Byron Buxton crushed his 25th homer of the year to left-center field, knotting the game at 1-1.

Neither offense managed much after that. Matthews settled down after the Ohtani homer, retiring 12 of the next 13 batters he faced. He finished with six innings pitched, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out five. The only extra-base hit he allowed after the first inning came in the sixth, when Freeman led off with a solo shot to center field, his 13th of the season, to give the Dodgers a 2-1 lead.

The Dodgers added two singles in the second and two more in the fourth but could not push across an additional run. Matthews escaped a bases-loaded situation in the fourth by striking out Chuckie Robinson.

Tanner Scott worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his 10th save of the season. He struck out one and did not allow a baserunner.

The Twins’ best chance to tie the game came in the eighth. Austin Martin led off with a sharp single to center, but Buxton struck out and Kody Clemens grounded into a forceout. Josh Bell then lined out sharply to right field to end the threat.

Los Angeles outhit Minnesota 9-3. Ohtani finished 1 for 4 with a home run and an RBI. Freeman went 1 for 4 with a homer. Tommy Edman had two singles and a walk, and Alex Call added two singles.

For the Twins, Buxton had the only extra-base hit, his solo homer. Royce Lewis singled in the first, and Martin singled in the eighth. The Twins struck out seven times and left four runners on base.

Lauer earned his third win of the season, matching his win total from his previous two starts. Matthews took the loss, also dropping to 3-5. Kyle Hurt pitched a scoreless seventh inning for Los Angeles, allowing one hit and striking out one. Will Klein surrendered two hits and one run in the eighth but preserved the lead. Taylor Rogers pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings for Minnesota, striking out one. Eric Orze allowed one hit in two-thirds of an inning.

The game lasted 2 hours, 31 minutes in front of an announced crowd of 35,244.

The Dodgers will send their ace to the mound Tuesday as they continue their three-game series against the Twins. Los Angeles then travels to San Diego for a weekend set before heading to Oakland. The Twins return home to face Colorado after this series, then hit the road for six games against Houston and New York.
