Cleveland Guardians at Houston Astros
HOUSTON (Interstat) — Jeremy Peña homered twice and drove in three runs in Friday’s 9-3 win over Cleveland, and the shortstop’s recent power surge makes him the centerpiece of the Houston Astros’ lineup as they host the Cleveland Guardians on Sunday evening at Daikin Park.
The game is the finale of a three-game series. Houston (36-41) lost Saturday’s contest 6-1, but took the opener behind a six-inning, 11-strikeout performance from Tatsuya Imai. Cleveland (40-36) holds a half-game lead in the American League Central standings and brings right-hander Kai-Wei Teng (3-6, 4.56 ERA) to the mound. Teng will face a Houston starter yet to be announced.
The weather forecast calls for temperatures around 85 degrees with rain, which could create delays or slick conditions on the field.
Peña, 28, has been hot at the plate over the past week. In his last five games, he is 8-for-19 (.421) with three home runs and six RBIs. During a 10-game stretch from June 7-19, he recorded hits in four of those contests, including multi-hit efforts against Detroit and Cleveland.
For the Guardians, right-hander Tanner Bibee is a pitcher to watch, though he is not scheduled to start Sunday. Bibee took the loss Friday against these same Astros, allowing three earned runs on four hits over 5 1/3 innings with seven strikeouts. In his two starts prior to that, Bibee was sharp: a seven-inning, two-run outing against Detroit on June 12 and an eight-inning, scoreless gem at Texas on June 6.
Bibee’s inconsistency has mirrored Cleveland’s recent stretch. The Guardians have won four of their last 10 games, including a 4-2 win at Milwaukee on June 18 and a 3-2 victory over Detroit on June 13. Their offense has been inconsistent, scoring three or fewer runs in seven of their past 10.
Houston has won seven of its last 10 after a difficult stretch through early June. Jose Altuve drove in four runs in Friday’s win, including a home run, and second baseman has been a steady presence at the top of the order.
The head-to-head series between the clubs stands at 2-2 through four games this season. Houston won on Monday, April 20 (9-2), and Friday (9-3), while Cleveland won on Tuesday, April 21 (8-5), and Saturday (6-1).
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-3 victory for Houston. The Astros opened as a -1.5 favorite with an over/under of 9.
Following Sunday’s game, Cleveland travels to Chicago for three games against the White Sox starting Monday. Houston heads to Toronto for a three-game set against the Blue Jays.
