Chicago White Sox at Detroit Tigers
PREVIEW: White Sox at Tigers
DETROIT (Interstat) — The Chicago White Sox will attempt to salvage the final game of a four-game series Sunday afternoon against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park.
First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. The weather forecast calls for 75 degrees with clouds.
Chicago (39-36) enters the game as a -1.5 run favorite in the betting line, with the over/under set at 8. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-4 White Sox victory.
Right-hander Davis Martin (9-2, 3.12 ERA) is Chicago’s probable starter. Martin has been the White Sox’s most reliable arm this season, posting nine wins against just two losses. He will face a Detroit lineup that has scored four runs in each of the first two games of this series.
Detroit (32-44) will counter with right-hander Troy Melton (3-1, 2.42 ERA). Melton has been dominant in his recent outings, including a six-inning, one-run performance against these same White Sox on Saturday, a 4-1 Tigers victory. In that start, he allowed just one hit and struck out five.
Players to watch
For the White Sox, left-handed reliever Sean Newcomb has been a key weapon out of the bullpen. Over his past eight appearances dating to May 26, Newcomb has posted a 0.68 ERA, allowing only one earned run across 13 2/3 innings. He has struck out 18 batters in that span.
For the Tigers, Melton has been nearly untouchable. In his past four starts, he owns a 1.73 ERA with 16 strikeouts over 26 innings.
Recent history
The Tigers have won the first two games of this series, 4-1 on Saturday and 4-3 on Friday. The two clubs split a four-game series in Chicago from May 29-June 1, with the White Sox winning three of four.
Chicago has won eight of its past 11 games overall. The Tigers have won two straight after losing four of their previous five.
Series note
This is the final game of the four-game set. The White Sox then open a three-game home series Monday against Cleveland. Detroit hosts the New York Yankees for a three-game series beginning Monday.
