Los Angeles Angels at Athletics
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Interstat) — The Athletics look to maintain their push above .500 when they host the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday at Sutter Health Park, with rookie left-hander Gage Jump aiming to build on a dominant outing against the same opponent.
Oakland (37-38) enters the contest having won the series opener 5-0 on Thursday, a game in which Jump (3-1) was masterful. The lefty tossed seven shutout innings, allowing just one hit and striking out seven without issuing a walk. It was the latest strong performance in a breakout June for Jump, who has posted a 1.42 ERA over his last four starts, including a five-inning, three-run outing against Colorado on June 12 and a six-inning shutout at Houston on June 7.
Jump’s emergence has bolstered an Athletics rotation that has helped the club win eight of its last 12 games. The offense has provided support as well, with catcher Shea Langeliers and left fielder Tyler Soderstrom each homering in Thursday’s victory.
The Angels (30-46) are mired in last place in the AL West and have lost 10 of their last 13. Their offense has managed only one run over the last two games, and they were shut out Thursday after Friday’s game was suspended scoreless.
Los Angeles will turn to left-handed reliever Brent Suter, who has been one of the few bright spots in a struggling bullpen. Suter, 35, has allowed just one earned run over his last 9 1/3 innings across six appearances, striking out eight. He worked two scoreless frames in Thursday’s loss, and has not allowed an earned run in seven of his last eight outings dating to May 27.
The Angels have lost four straight and six of seven meetings with this season. The Athletics took four of five from Los Angeles in a May series, including a 14-6 win May 19.
An Interstat projection simulator forecasts a high-scoring affair, with the Athletics favored 7-6.
First pitch is scheduled for 7:07 p.m. The teams close the series Sunday before travels to face the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday. The Angels head home to host the Baltimore Orioles on Monday.
