Toronto Blue Jays at Chicago Cubs
CHICAGO (Interstat) — The Chicago Cubs host the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday afternoon in the opener of a four-game series at Wrigley Field.
Chicago enters play at 39-36, while Toronto sits at 37-38. First pitch is scheduled for 1:20 p.m. CDT under cloudy skies and a temperature of 72 degrees.
The Blue Jays will send right-hander Trey Yesavage to the mound. Yesavage (2-3) is coming off a strong start Thursday in Boston, where he allowed three earned runs on four hits over 7 1/3 innings in a 4-3 victory. The outing was a rebound after he gave up five earned runs in each of his previous two starts, including a loss to Baltimore on June 5.
The Cubs counter with right-hander Javier Assad. Assad (3-0) has been sharp recently, allowing just two earned runs over 18 innings across his last three starts. He threw six scoreless innings in a 5-1 win at San Francisco on June 12 and followed that with 5 2/3 innings of two-run ball in an 8-6 victory over Colorado on Wednesday.
Toronto has won three straight, all in Boston, after taking a 3-0 decision Wednesday and a 6-1 win Tuesday. The Blue Jays lost three of four to the New York Yankees before that run.
Chicago took two of three from Colorado at home this week, dropping Tuesday’s series opener before winning Wednesday. The Cubs are coming off a 1-5 road trip through San Francisco and Colorado.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. homered and drove in a run for Toronto on Thursday. Shortstop Dansby Swanson homered and had two RBIs for Chicago in Wednesday’s win.
The Interstat game simulator projects a 6-5 Cubs victory.
After this series, Toronto returns home for a six-game homestand against Houston and Texas. Chicago travels to New York for four games against the Mets before a three-game series at Milwaukee.
