Gage Jump Shuts Out Angels as Athletics Win 5‑0

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Interstat) — Gage Jump pitched seven innings of one-hit shutout ball, striking out seven, and the Athletics erupted for five runs in the first inning to beat the Los Angeles Angels 5-0 on Thursday night at Sutter Health Park.

Jump, who earned his third win against one loss, allowed only a double to Oswald Peraza in the fourth inning and did not walk a batter. He threw 52 of his 78 pitches for strikes and faced one batter over the minimum, retiring 13 consecutive Angels at one point. The left-hander lowered his season ERA to 2.73 after his second straight strong start.

The Athletics (37-38) jumped on Angels starter Ryan Johnson immediately. Zack Gelof led off the bottom of the first with a sharp line-drive single to left. Nick Kurtz followed with a double to left-center, putting runners at second and third. Shea Langeliers then crushed a 1-1 pitch to center field for his 19th homer of the season, a three-run blast that made it 3-0.

Tyler Soderstrom followed with his 13th homer, a solo shot to left-center, pushing the lead to 4-0. Jacob Wilson singled, Jonah Heim singled, and after a flyout, Henry Bolte lifted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Wilson for a 5-0 lead. Johnson recorded only two outs in the inning before Gelof walked to load the bases, but Kurtz flied out to end the frame.

Johnson, making his second major-league start, allowed eight hits and five runs over five innings, striking out two and walking one. The loss dropped him to 0-2 on the season.

Jump, meanwhile, faced the minimum through three innings after a pickoff erased a first-inning walk. He retired the side in order in the second, third, fifth and sixth. The only ball the Angels hit out of the infield besides Peraza’s double was a lineout by Zach Neto in the fourth. Jump struck out Christian Moore twice, fanned Denzer Guzman and Logan O’Hoppe, and induced six groundouts.

The Angels (30-46) managed four hits in the game, all singles, and never advanced a runner past third. Peraza’s double with one out in the fourth put runners at second and third after Nick Madrigal walked, but Christian Moore struck out to end the inning. In the seventh, Vaughn Grissom walked but was picked off first by Langeliers to end that threat.

In the eighth, Denzer Guzman walked and Wade Meckler singled, but Neto lined out sharply to left and Madrigal flied out. The Angels loaded the bases in the ninth on singles by Grissom and Moore and a walk, but Guzman struck out swinging to end the game.

Brent Suter pitched two scoreless innings for the Angels, allowing no hits and striking out two. Ryan Zeferjahn tossed a scoreless eighth, striking out one. For the Athletics, Mason Barnett worked the eighth inning, allowing one hit and striking out one, and Hogan Harris closed the ninth with two hits allowed and three strikeouts.

Catcher Shea Langeliers finished 1-for-4 with the homer and three RBIs. Soderstrom went 1-for-4 with his solo shot. Gelof was 1-for-3 with a walk. Bolte singled, walked, and drove in a run. Kurtz doubled in his first at-bat and later struck out, finishing 1-for-4. Wilson and Heim each had two hits.

The game lasted 2 hours, 31 minutes in front of an announced crowd of 9,245.

The two teams continue their four-game series Friday evening. The Angels have lost five of their last six. The Athletics have won three of their last four. The season series is now tied 2-2 after the Athletics swept a four-game set at Angel Stadium in May, then the Angels won the first two of this series.
