Toronto Blue Jays at Boston Red Sox

BOSTON (Interstat) — The Toronto Blue Jays look to complete a three-game sweep of the Boston Red Sox on Thursday afternoon at Fenway Park, sending right-hander Sonny Gray to the mound against Boston’s Payton Tolle.

First pitch is scheduled for the afternoon. The forecast calls for 79-degree temperatures with clouds.

Gray (8-1) has been one of the American League’s most effective starters this season, posting a 2.84 ERA and striking out 68 batters over 73 innings. He has pitched at least six innings in seven of his nine starts. Gray has not faced the Red Sox this season.

Tolle (0-4 in his last five decisions) has struggled since a strong outing against Baltimore on June 3, when he pitched six scoreless innings, striking out five. In two starts since, he has allowed seven earned runs over 11 innings, including three earned runs on four hits in a 6-1 loss to Toronto on Tuesday.

Toronto (35-38) has won four of five meetings with Boston (29-41) this season, outscoring the Red Sox 25-7 in those games. The Blue Jays took the first two games of this series by scores of 6-1 and 2-0, with Dylan Cease earning the win Tuesday after striking out seven over five scoreless innings. George Springer homered and drove in three runs, and Davis Schneider added two hits and two RBIs in the series opener.

Boston has lost four of its last five games overall and has dropped six of seven at Fenway. The Red Sox have managed just two runs in the first two games of this series. Jarren Duran homered Tuesday and has been one of Boston’s few consistent hitters, batting .287 with 12 homers on the season.

Tolle will need to reverse a trend of allowing early runs. In his start Tuesday, he gave up two runs in the first inning. He has allowed 23 earned runs over 34 innings in his six starts.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-2 Toronto victory. The Blue Jays enter as -1.5 favorites, with the over/under set at 8.5.

Following Thursday’s game, Toronto heads to Chicago for a three-game series against the Cubs beginning Friday. Boston travels to Seattle for three games, then to Denver for three games against the Colorado Rockies. The Red Sox return home June 25 to host the New York Yankees for a four-game series.
