Angels shut out Diamondbacks behind Detmers’ dominant start
PHOENIX (Interstat) — Reid Detmers pitched seven scoreless innings and the Los Angeles Angels pounded out 14 hits Tuesday night to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-0 at Chase Field.
Detmers, who earned his third win of the season, allowed three hits and struck out three without issuing a walk. He faced only two batters over the minimum and retired 11 straight at one point. The left-hander has now thrown 13 consecutive scoreless innings over his last two starts, following a win against Houston on June 10.
The Angels gave Detmers all the support he needed early. They scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings, then broke the game open with a two-run fifth.
Mike Trout led the offensive attack, going 2 for 5 with a home run and three RBI. Logan O’Hoppe collected three hits in four at-bats, while Donovan Walton and Zach Neto each drove in two runs. Neto homered in the third inning and added a triple in the fifth.
Arizona managed only four hits off four Angels pitchers. Merrill Kelly took the loss, allowing five earned runs on nine hits over 4⅓ innings, falling to 5-6.
The Angels struck first in the top of the second. Jo Adell led off with a double to center, moved to third on a groundout and scored on Wade Meckler’s single to center.
In the third, Neto led off with a home run to left, his 14th of the season, to make it 2-0.
The Angels extended the lead in the fourth. Denzer Guzman singled, O’Hoppe doubled and Walton singled to right, scoring Guzman. O’Hoppe was thrown out at home on the play, but Los Angeles led 3-0.
The pivotal moment came in the fifth. Neto tripled to right-center and Trout followed with a two-run homer to center, pushing the lead to 5-0. Trout’s 17th home run of the season proved more than enough for Detmers.
Los Angeles added a run in the sixth. Guzman singled, O’Hoppe singled and after a popout and a strikeout, Trout doubled to left, scoring Guzman to make it 6-0.
The Angels completed the scoring in the eighth. O’Hoppe singled and Walton hit a ground-rule double to right-center, scoring O’Hoppe.
Detmers exited after the seventh having thrown 63 pitches, with 21 strikes and 42 balls. Chase Silseth and Kirby Yates each pitched a scoreless inning in relief.
The Diamondbacks threatened only once. In the sixth, Ketel Marte singled and Geraldo Perdomo singled to put runners on the corners with one out, but Corbin Carroll struck out to end the inning.
Arizona’s bullpen kept the game from getting out of hand. Brandyn Garcia struck out two in a perfect eighth. Drey Jameson allowed two hits and one run over two innings, striking out three. Ryan Thompson gave up one hit in two-thirds of an inning.
The Angels improved to 30-44 with the win, while the Diamondbacks fell to 37-36. The teams wrap up the two-game series Wednesday night.
Attendance was announced as 36,905. The game lasted 2 hours, 29 minutes.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Los Angeles 5, Arizona 4. Interstat’s ELO system had given Arizona a 62.80 percent probability to win. The Angels had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total score of seven went over the over-under line of 8.5.
