Reds blast Mets 12‑0 behind Suarez’s two homers
CINCINNATI (Interstat) — Eugenio Suárez hit a grand slam in a six-run second inning, JJ Bleday added a three-run homer in the eighth and the Cincinnati Reds routed the New York Mets 12-0 on Monday night at Great American Ball Park.
Chase Burns pitched six dominant innings for the Reds, allowing three hits and striking out nine without a walk to improve to 8-1. Tobias Myers took the loss for the Mets, dropping to 0-2 after surrendering nine runs on five hits and four walks over two innings.
The Reds broke the game open early, scoring three runs in the first and six more in the second to take a 9-0 lead. Suárez, who finished 2 for 4 with a pair of homers and six RBIs, provided the biggest blow with his seventh blast of the season, a grand slam to center field that capped the second-inning outburst.
Bleday went 2 for 4 with a homer, a walk and four RBIs. His 13th homer of the season, a three-run shot in the eighth off reliever Drew Carlton, capped the scoring. Sal Stewart was 1 for 4 with an RBI single in the second, and Spencer Steer drove in a run with a groundout in the first.
Burns set the tone early, retiring the side in order in the first inning with three strikeouts. The right-hander allowed only a double to Bo Bichette leading off the game, then retired the next 10 batters before Bichette doubled again in the fourth. Burns left after six innings, having thrown 89 pitches.
Myers, making his second start of the season for the Mets, struggled with command from the outset. Blake Dunn led off the Reds’ first with a double to right, and after Bleday lined out, Stewart walked. Steer’s groundout to third scored Dunn, and Suárez followed with a two-run homer to left-center for a 3-0 lead.
The Mets had a chance to cut into the lead in the fourth when Bichette doubled and Juan Soto walked, but Burns induced infield popouts from Jared Young and A.J. Ewing, then struck out Brett Baty to end the threat.
Cincinnati’s second inning began with Matt McLain walking, Tyler Stephenson singling and Edwin Arroyo bunting for a single to load the bases. Dunn popped out, then Bleday drew a walk to force in McLain. Stewart singled to right, scoring Stephenson, and after Steer struck out, Suárez launched his grand slam to center, making it 9-0.
The Reds added three more in the eighth. McLain walked again, Stephenson singled and, after Arroyo lined out and Dunn flied out, Bleday drove a 2-1 pitch from Carlton over the wall in right-center for his 13th homer.
The Mets managed only six hits, all singles aside from Bichette’s two doubles. Bichette went 3 for 5 with two doubles, but the Mets went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position and left 11 men on base.
Cincinnati’s bullpen closed out the shutout with three scoreless innings. Caleb Ferguson worked two-thirds of an inning, allowing one hit and striking out two. Chase Petty threw two and one-third hitless innings with a strikeout, and Brock Burke pitched a scoreless seventh, giving up one hit and striking out one.
The attendance was 19,853, and the game lasted 2 hours, 53 minutes.
The Mets fell to 32-40 and have lost four of their last five games. The Reds improved to 34-37, winning for the third time in four games. The two teams continue their three-game series Tuesday night.
