Montgomery, White Sox rally past Dodgers in six-run sixth
CHICAGO (Interstat) — A six-run sixth inning powered the Chicago White Sox to a 6-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday afternoon at Guaranteed Rate Field, salvaging the finale of a three-game series in front of 38,507.
The White Sox, who dropped the series opener 7-1 on Friday and won 8-2 on Saturday, evened their season record at 38-32 while the Dodgers fell to 45-27. The game lasted 2 hours, 36 minutes.
Los Angeles struck first in the opening inning. Shohei Ohtani reached on catcher interference by Drew Romo, but Andy Pages grounded into a double play. Freddie Freeman then crushed his 11th home run of the season to right field, giving the Dodgers a 1-0 lead.
Both starting pitchers settled in after that. Dodgers right-hander Emmet Sheehan worked five innings, allowing four hits and three earned runs while striking out eight. White Sox starter Sean Newcomb, who entered the game in the second inning after an early injury replacement, delivered 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief with four strikeouts, emerging as the game’s top star.
The Dodgers threatened in the fifth when Ryan Ward doubled and moved to third on a groundout, but Newcomb intentionally walked Ohtani and then induced a forceout from Pages to end the inning.
Los Angeles maintained its 1-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth, when the White Sox erupted for six runs on five hits, including three home runs. Sam Antonacci led off with his second homer of the season, a solo shot to right field. Miguel Vargas followed with a single, and Andrew Benintendi doubled to left, scoring Vargas to make it 2-1. Colson Montgomery then crushed his 17th home run to right, a two-run shot that scored Benintendi and put Chicago ahead 4-1. Braden Montgomery singled, and Chase Meidroth homered to right, his sixth of the year, plating Braden Montgomery to extend the lead to 6-1. The rally chased Sheehan, who took the loss, falling to 3-4.
Los Angeles chipped away. In the seventh, Dalton Rushing doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Alex Freeland, trimming the deficit to 6-2. In the eighth, Mookie Betts led off with his seventh homer, a line drive to left, cutting it to 6-3.
The Dodgers mounted a final threat in the ninth against White Sox closer Seranthony Domínguez. Ryan Ward walked, and after Dalton Rushing struck out, Alex Freeland doubled to right, scoring Ward to make it 6-4. Ohtani walked, putting the tying run on base with one out, but Domínguez induced a forceout from Pages and struck out Freeman to earn his 12th save.
Domínguez worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning, allowing one hit and one earned run while striking out two in the ninth. Erick Fedde, who entered in the fourth inning and pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings, earned the win, improving to 2-5.
For Chicago, Colson Montgomery finished 2-for-4 with a double, a homer and two RBIs. Chase Meidroth went 1-for-3 with a homer and two RBIs, and Sam Antonacci was 1-for-4 with a homer and an RBI. For Los Angeles, Mookie Betts went 2-for-4 with a homer and an RBI, and Freddie Freeman homered. Betts also made several defensive plays at shortstop.
The Dodgers’ bullpen held the White Sox scoreless over the final three innings. Blake Treinen pitched a scoreless seventh, allowing one hit and striking out one. Jonathan Hernández worked a scoreless eighth, allowing no hits.
The White Sox defense was solid, turning two double plays and getting strong outings from Newcomb and Fedde. Newcomb’s performance continued a stellar stretch; in his previous three appearances, he had thrown a combined 5 innings without allowing an earned run, striking out eight.
The Dodgers had won four of their previous five games entering the contest, including a 7-1 win Saturday, but could not overcome the White Sox’s explosive sixth inning.
The series split the season series through three games, with the Dodgers winning two of the three. The teams do not meet again this season.
