Duran homers, Buehler leads Padres past Orioles 5‑2
BALTIMORE (Interstat) — Walker Buehler pitched six solid innings, Rodolfo Durán drove in three runs with a double and a home run, and the San Diego Padres defeated the Baltimore Orioles 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at Oriole Park at Camden Yards to take two of three in the interleague series.
Durán’s two-run homer in the seventh inning broke open a tight game after the Padres had nursed a one-run lead, and Mason Miller worked a scoreless ninth for his 19th save. San Diego improved to 37-33, while Baltimore fell to 34-39.
The Padres grabbed an early lead in the second inning. Samad Taylor led off with a soft bunt single off Orioles starter Trevor Rogers, then moved to second on a groundout. After Jase Bowen struck out, Durán doubled off the center-field wall to score Taylor. Fernando Tatis Jr. followed with an RBI single to center, and the Padres led 2-0.
Buehler, who improved to 4-3, allowed one run on five hits over six innings, striking out seven and walking two. He worked out of a jam in the third when Baltimore put two runners on with no outs but stranded them. The Orioles broke through in the fifth when Jeremiah Jackson led off with a solo home run to right field, his seventh of the season, cutting the lead to 2-1.
The score remained that way until the seventh, when the Padres padded their advantage. Will Wagner walked to lead off the inning against reliever Rico Garcia. Bowen struck out, but Durán followed by launching a 1-0 pitch over the center-field fence for his third home run, scoring Wagner and giving San Diego a 4-1 lead.
Baltimore answered in the bottom half against the Padres bullpen. Blaze Alexander led off with a double off left-hander Bradgley Rodriguez. After Taylor Ward grounded out, Gunnar Henderson singled to right field to score Alexander, making it 4-2. But Rodriguez induced a double play from Adley Rutschman to end the inning.
San Diego added an insurance run in the ninth off Orioles reliever Yennier Cano. Wagner reached on a fielding error by shortstop Henderson, then advanced to third after a fielder’s choice and a throwing error by second baseman Jackson Holliday. Tatis Jr. lofted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Wagner, extending the lead to 5-2.
Miller retired the side in order in the ninth, striking out two to seal the victory. He lowered his ERA to 2.01 and moved into a tie for second in the National League in saves.
The Padres outhit Baltimore 8-10 despite being outhit. Durán finished 2-for-4 with the double, homer and three RBIs. Tatis Jr. went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Jackson Merrill added two hits.
For the Orioles, Alexander went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Henderson had two hits and drove in the lone run. Samuel Basallo went 1-for-4. Trevor Rogers (3-8) took the loss, allowing two runs on five hits over six innings, striking out four and walking two.
Rico Garcia allowed two runs in one inning of relief. Yennier Cano tossed a scoreless eighth with two strikeouts.
The game included several defensive miscues. Baltimore committed three errors, two by Henderson and one by Holliday, which led to an unearned run in the ninth. The Padres turned two double plays.
San Diego took the series after splitting the first two games. The Padres won 9-3 on Saturday after losing 7-3 on Friday. The Orioles had won four of their previous five games before Sunday’s defeat.
Buehler worked efficiently, throwing 89 pitches. He allowed only one hit through the first four innings before Jackson’s home run. The right-hander struck out the side in the first and did not allow a walk until the sixth.
The Padres will open a three-game series at St. Louis on Monday, while the Orioles travel to Seattle for a three-game set starting Tuesday.
