Miami Marlins at Pittsburgh Pirates

PITTSBURGH (Interstat) — The Miami Marlins visit the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday at PNC Park with both teams hovering around .500. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. EDT under a forecast of 73 degrees with rain. The Pirates (35-33) enter as a -1.5 run-line favorite, while the Marlins (34-35) look to build on a shutout victory.

Miami sends right-hander Tyler Phillips to the mound. Phillips (2-1 in his last five starts) threw five innings of two-hit, shutout ball in a 2-0 win over Arizona on Thursday, striking out five. He has been inconsistent, but his scoreless outings have been sharp: he also worked 3 2/3 hitless innings against the Mets on May 24 and three shutout frames vs. Atlanta on May 20. However, he has been tagged for three earned runs in each of three other recent starts, lasting no more than five innings.

The Pirates counter with outfielder Tyler Callihan, who was the hero in Wednesday’s 9-8 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Callihan went 2 for 2 with two home runs and four RBIs. The performance capped a strong stretch for the Pittsburgh lineup, which has won three of its last five games.

Miami has won five of its last six games overall. Thursday’s 2-0 win against the Diamondbacks featured a combined three-hit shutout from Phillips, Pete Fairbanks and Calvin Faucher. The Marlins are looking for their sixth win in seven games.

Pittsburgh enters off a split of a two-game series with the Dodgers. The Pirates’ 9-8 victory Wednesday featured Callihan’s outburst, a home run from Spencer Horwitz and a solid start from Jared Jones (4 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 4 K).

The Interstat game simulator projects a 6-5 Miami victory. The over/under is set at 8 runs.

Following Friday’s game, the teams meet again Saturday and Sunday before Miami travels to Philadelphia and Pittsburgh heads to Oakland.
