Detroit Tigers at Cleveland Guardians
PREVIEW: Tigers at Guardians
CLEVELAND (Interstat) — The Detroit Tigers visit the Cleveland Guardians on Friday night at Progressive Field, with first pitch scheduled for 7:10 p.m. under partly cloudy skies and 79 degrees.
Detroit (29-40) enters on a high after a dominant 11-0 win Thursday over Minnesota, but the Tigers face a Guardians team that has owned them this season. Cleveland (37-33) swept a four-game series in Detroit from May 18-21, outscoring the Tigers 18-8.
Right-hander Tanner Bibee (1-7, 5.20 ERA) takes the mound for Detroit. Bibee has struggled mightily, losing seven of eight decisions this season. The Tigers hope their offense can provide support after scoring 11 runs Thursday.
The player to watch for Detroit is right-hander Keider Montero, who threw 6 1/3 scoreless innings in Thursday’s win, allowing four hits with four strikeouts. Over his past five appearances, Montero has a 3.21 ERA with 20 strikeouts in 28 innings.
For Cleveland, left-hander Will Dion will work out of the bullpen. Dion has appeared in five games this season, posting a 3.86 ERA over 10 1/3 innings. He threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings Wednesday against the Yankees.
Cleveland is coming off a three-game sweep by the Yankees, losing 8-4 on Wednesday. The Guardians have lost five of six overall.
Friday’s game is the opener of a four-game series. Detroit is listed as a -1.5 favorite, and the over/under is 8 runs. The Interstat game simulator projects a 6-3 Tigers victory.
Following this series, Detroit travels to Houston for three games. Cleveland heads to Milwaukee for a three-game set.
