Chapman, Giants rally past Nationals with 11‑10 victory

SAN FRANCISCO (Interstat) — Matt Chapman had four hits, two home runs and three RBIs, and the San Francisco Giants scored five runs in both the eighth and ninth innings to overcome a 10-1 deficit and beat the Washington Nationals 11-10 on Wednesday afternoon at Oracle Park.

The Nationals led 10-1 after seven innings, fueled by James Wood’s two-run homer in the third and a four-run sixth keyed by Daylen Lile’s two-run single. Washington added three more in the seventh. But the Giants rallied in the eighth on Daniel Susac’s RBI double and a sacrifice fly, then completed the comeback in the ninth. Chapman’s double made it 10-7 before Bryce Eldridge hit a grand slam, his fourth homer, to walk off.

Washington had 14 hits, matching San Francisco’s total. Lile went 4 for 5 with two RBIs, and Curtis Mead homered. Mitchell Parker (2-3) took the loss after allowing five runs in the eighth. Reiver Sanmartin (1-0) earned the win with two innings of relief, giving up one run.

The Nationals fell to 35-34, the Giants improved to 28-41. Attendance was 32,459, and the game lasted 3 hours, 2 minutes.
